About the role

We are looking for a Product Designer to help us raise $1T for charity. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing products and features to help our nonprofit partners understand and steward their donors, and use our platform to raise money. A successful candidate will be working alongside a talented team of engineers, product managers, and designers to gain insights in the nonprofit industry, in an environment that cares about people, values work-life balance, and focuses on learning and growth.

We are looking for someone with a track record of leading projects to successful outcomes for the users and the business, with strong UX/UI and visual design skills, and an eagerness to leverage research insights and data to deliver projects.

FreeWill has set compensation and a non-negotiation policy for fairness reasons (we don't think that an individual's pay should be determined by how comfortable they are negotiating). As a result, we like to be transparent and up front about the compensation. When we make an offer, we provide multiple options so that employees can choose between compensation packages that prioritize salary or stock options. The offers for this role will be between $110,000 and $120,000; offers will also include stock options.

This role will report to the Senior Design Manager and is remote with a start date on or after January 2, 2024. We cannot sponsor H1Bs at this time.


  • Translate product requirements into wireframes, build interactive prototypes, and iterate designs as needed to arrive at elegant and clean end-to-end experiences that provide visual consistency.
  • Understand and lead the vision and key objectives for your product area on your team, with support from your manager and design team.
  • Work closely with product and development teams to analyze, ideate, design, test, and implement new features.
  • Deliver high quality UI design that supports our design system and brand, while pushing the team to produce higher quality products.
  • Present designs to internal teams and clients for critique and research, bringing a strong rationale to everything you design, while listening and applying the learnings from the conversations you have.
  • Facilitate feedback and working sessions internally and with FreeWill users and customers.
  • Learn about estate planning and charitable giving spaces to ensure that designs meet needs across the company.
  • Define and conduct research and data analyses when needed to prioritize and identify most appropriate options.
  • Evaluate designs and support UAT and QA with engineers.
  • Collaborate with senior designers, engineers, and product managers to ensure scalability and consistency of designs and quality of data.
  • Be a team player and help build an inclusive team environment. Contribute to design team rituals and practice.

Required skills and experience

  • Very strong grasp of visual design and UX principles
  • 4+ years experience in a product design role
  • Experience leading successful design projects
  • Highly skilled in designing and prototyping in Figma.
  • Knowledge of how modern websites and applications are built
  • Experience collaborating with PMs and engineers in an agile environment
  • Capable of defining goals and requirements for research, conducting user interviews, and sharing actionable takeaways with the team
  • Strong communication, emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills
  • Strong reading and comprehension skills

Nice to have

  • Experience in the graphic or visual design space
  • Experience designing administrative systems for those working in specialized roles such as legal or supporting nonprofit organizations
  • Experience translating legal regulations through designs
  • Experience scoping and defining research questions and executing research studies

Other Important Traits

  • You are comfortable wearing multiple hats and collaborating with people outside of the product team
  • You’re intensely curious, and happy to work in a scrappy way to generate the best ideas
  • You keep the picture of the bigger goal in mind while working on smaller pieces
  • You are excited to be creative and explore visual design ideas

The hiring process for this role is as follows:

  • Recruiter Phone Screen (30 minutes)
  • Technical interview (30 minutes)
  • Take home exercise (60 minutes)
  • Final interviews with 3 FreeWill team members (One 45 minute interview, and two separate 30 minute interviews)
  • Offer (contingent on positive references)
