Do I have the necessary skills to work remotely?

Although remote work has seen a slow but steady rise in the last couple of years, it’s still uncharted territory for most people.

The good news is that it’s not a reserved privilege just for coders or online entrepreneurs anymore. You don’t need to spend 1-year studying books, webinars, or buy expensive online courses.

That being said, your journey towards a location independent career will still require a lot of effort. You just can’t cheat this.

You have to be quick! Or do you?

There is a big shortage of remote work at the moment. What if someone finds and applies to the perfect remote gig before me?

The order in which applicants sign up for the job doesn’t matter. It’s the quality of the applicant that counts. Yes, there are a couple of exceptions to this, but – if the job offer disappears with the first candidate and the company doesn’t take its time to pick the proper person – do you really want to work there? In fact, they probably just helped you to dodge a bullet.

Be visible. Be different. Stand out.

Your online footprint

CVs and cover letters are nice. But they are not gonna cut it for you when it comes to working remotely as Frontend Coder.

Remember – companies are taking big risks when hiring new Frontend Coder remotely. The amount of time and resources invested in picking the right candidate is not negligible. The amount of time and resources invested into picking the wrong candidate, having to start the process over again, is huge – while the work is just piling up. It may even discourage them from hiring remotely in the future altogether.

In other words, there has to be a mutual attraction from the beginning.

There are a couple of things your potential remote employer should definitely find when they are gonna google your ass. (and they will)

Your little internet corner

Picture of a cat sleeping in it's little cozy corner

You may think the age of personal blogs and websites is gone, lost in the 90s and early 2000s. Replaced by unified experience on LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social networks. But it’s not. With so many candidates hunting for remote jobs, it is more than ever important to differentiate yourself.

One great essay is all that separates you from getting hired remotely in top companies of your field.

Create your online business card on AboutMe. Start a new blog on Medium. Make a new Ghost page. Build your fancy site on Carrd. Make your website from scratch. It’s up to you. The important message is to build something of your own.

Your social media

Picture of a phone scrolling through social media feed

Now. We don’t suggest you make it easy for your potential employer to find pictures from your last romantic getaway or island hopping. On the contrary – make your social accounts as private as possible for the general public. But! At the same time, make it possible for people to find you. It makes you look more legit.

Why? Because what do you do when you get an offer from a company you didn’t hear before? You look them up online. It gives you the confirmation you need before starting any business with them.

Going the Extra Mile

We strongly encourage you to create an extra account for your professional alter-ego and share your journey here. Things you’ve already learned on the way and other niche-related bits n bites. You will eventually attract your own audience, which will help you immensely.

Pick the platform typical for your industry.

Marketer? Probably give Twitter a shot. Photographer? Instagram, or maybe YouTube / Vimeo. Coder? Github. Designer? Dribble. Translator? Translators café. You get the idea right.

Showcasing your work

Picture of cakes in a café

This is the perfect job for your website. Slam the Showcase button to your main menu and create a gallery/list with all your recent work.

Use external services to host if needed. Youtube, Vimeo, Instagram, Github, Medium. Based on your industry. You know the drill.

This can be your recent client work, cool side projects, university projects you are really proud of, content you made during your last gig. Careful with the last one as there could be some copyright issues depending on your contract.

Don’t have any recent work? Make some.

Look for websites in your niche with weak copy, bad graphics, or slow loading time and remake them on your own. Create a valid social media strategy and offer it to a local restaurant that is clearly struggling in this area. Maybe they will be excited. Maybe they won’t.

The great thing is that even if not interested in your work, you now have content for yourself. Worst case scenario = you just built a personal portfolio.

Facts we dug up for you

We have thoroughly analyzed the remote work marketplace, and here’s what we’ve learned.

  • There are over 90 remote job boards.
  • The majority of them offer non-tech jobs as well.
  • Over 10% of open remote positions are available across the globe (the rest is region or country-specific – but still remote)
  • Roughly 32,000 new remote jobs open each month, not counting self-employed folks and entrepreneurs!
  • Job boards contain only something around 50% of all remote positions. The rest is kind of hidden on companies’ career pages.

We are looking for a Back End Developer with solid backend development skills and an interest in frontend development. If you have a passion for innovative backend solutions, for expanding your competencies, and for improving the wellbeing of the users, please read further…

To flourish in this role you must have:

A passion for technology

We expect that in the role of Back End Developer, you have solid experience in Python and that you have a range of projects in production and have plenty of experience in their maintenance.

Great problem-solving skills

  • You'll work together with our small cross-functional team in a fast-paced but relaxed environment, turning ideas into reality quickly. You’ll be contributing to the product (and company) development far beyond backend development, in our open, collaborative and silo-less manner. We are always looking for ways to improve the UX and everyone is invited to question and throw in ideas - and find optimal solutions to any problems we encounter.

Server and general infrastructure maintenance

  • A key role will be the monitoring and maintenance of our servers. You will have experience in load balancers, workers and server monitoring tools. It will be your job to ensure we have minimum downtime. In addition, we hope that you have a good knowledge of server and data security, and how to mitigate any potential attacks.

Growth mindset and shared purpose

  • You need to have a passion for wellbeing and strong drive to expand your competences and boldly tackle new challenges. You will be working closely with our international team across disciplines. You need great communication skills in English and humble attitude to learn from one another.

Experience and/or interest of these matters is beneficial:

  • Knowledge and experience about frontend development

  • Recommendation algorithms

  • Video streaming services

  • Subscription services

  • Audio / video production

  • AWS development

  • Experience with frontend development (TypeScript/React/React Native/AWS Amplify/Objective-C/Swift)

To thrive in the fast-paced, ambitious environment of a start-up company you need the ability to take initiative and have a very hands-on attitude to work. In turn we offer you a friendly, flexible working environment, a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package including health care.See more jobs at Yogaia

We are currently seeking a Ruby on Rails Developer. Experience working in front-end frameworks like React and Angular is also desirable (although the emphasis here is on Ruby/Rails). This is a remote position.

The ideal candidate is analytical, highly organized, and self-motivated with a proven track record in delivering modern application solutions (particularly Ruby or web-based technologies). Beyond strong technical skills, we are looking for someone with mature communication skills and the desire to be a part of a cooperative development effort.

Initially you'll be part of a dedicated project team configuring and developing a custom health science platform for drug trials. This role will grow into opportunities to work on other tech stacks and other projects - as a small company you'll always have opportunity to work on new challenges.

This might be a good fit for you if:

  • You enjoy working at small companies with close-knit teams

  • You consider yourself adaptive and enjoy wearing multiple hats

  • You consider software development a craft or discipline, and are interested in having that consideration shape your development activities

  • You like board games (no really, we have a board game night)

This probably isn't a good fit if you:

  • Need a lot of structure or oversight to do your best work. Our remote environment requires team members to be able to tolerate ambiguity and be assertive and communicative when tasks are unclear.

  • Are really keenly interested in just one specific technology niche (nothing wrong with that - but you'll probably get frustrated here)

  • Need 'to be right' all the time. We're a growing, collaborative team that frequently tries new approaches. Team members need to be open to taking risks and reasoning with one another.

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience as a software engineer/developer-using Ruby on Rails and related web technologies (HTML5, CSS3. Javascript, jQuery, and SQL).

  • Solid working knowledge of the Ruby language and the Rails framework.

  • Understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns and how they apply to Ruby.

  • Solid understanding of SQL and data modeling for scalability and performance

  • Experience creating RESTful APIs for integration with mobile apps and websites

  • Proficiency with Git as a source code management tool

  • Experience with Agile development methodologies

  • Experience with an Agile-based work tracking system such as Atlassian Jira, Assembla, or Rally

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with Javascript frameworks - Backbone.JS, Angular, React, Vue.js

  • Experience with Behavior Drive Development (BDD)

  • Solid understanding of one or more NOSQL databases - MongoDB, CouchDB, Cassandra, etc.

  • Knowledge of AWS, iOS SDK, Android SDK

Frontend Developer
Full-Time | Remote, Canada | Engineering

Fluorescent Design Inc. is hiring a Frontend Developer.

Fluorescent is a fully-remote eCommerce software design and development company located in second bedrooms and home offices across Canada. As official Shopify partners, we actively develop and maintain a small catalogue of premium Shopify templates (called “themes”).

Our team is small, but growing. We value autonomy, collaboration, and empathy for the customer. Being a remote team means that we work asynchronously on most of our projects. We believe in empowerment over management, and trust that each member is self-sufficient in delivering their work while asking for direction or support when necessary.

We’re looking for a Frontend Developer who values user experience, performance and accessibility. Through our enduring interest in how people use our products, Fluorescent embraces a model of software development that is iterative and gradual. Like high-performance engines or grandma’s cooking, our products are built through a process of continuous refinement (usually on two week release cycles). We’re looking for someone who is comfortable embodying this approach.

We offer a competitive salary, four weeks vacation, remote work, and an opportunity to get in on the ground floor. Getting in on the ground floor means that you're going to have an impact on the way the company works. It also means that there won't be guidelines and that processes will occasionally be vague and ambiguous. If you're someone who needs a straightforward process to follow, this role might not be for you.

A number of our team members have opted to work a four-day work week. If you’d like a four-day work week and you’re the right candidate, we’re happy to discuss it.

The salary band for the full-time position is $60,000 - $90,000/year.

About the Role

As a Developer with Fluorescent, you’ll be working on improving and refining our collection of Shopify themes. Our catalogue of products is small, so you’ll have time to get to know each of them well, to take ownership, and to have a lasting impact. You’ll be developing new features, iterating on old ones, writing tests, fixing bugs, improving processes, prioritizing issues etc.

In the first three months, you'll:
  • Onboard to our tech stack, release cycle and product roadmap
  • Contribute to our codebase, writing readable, performant code
  • Deploy your contributions to production
  • Assist in QA and testing of new and existing features
  • Actively contribute to product planning sessions with the team

In the first 12 months, you'll:
  • Deliver major features and technical projects from start to finish
  • Contribute to our standards of technical development
  • Collaborate with your team on project planning
  • Experiment with creative solutions and new technologies to create exceptional themes
  • Work closely with the rest of the engineering team to guarantee a high-quality product

Relevant Skills & Technical Knowledge

Shopify themes are a mixture of HTML, CSS, Javascript and the Liquid templating language. We use Git for version control. We use Figma for design.

About you

You are someone who cares about doing great work and wants to improve your craft over time. For us, this doesn't mean spending every spare minute hacking on side projects, but means that you bring a desire to learn and improve your skills as a software developer.

You are able to manage your own time and prioritize the work that needs to be done. We're here to support you, but being a part of a remote team means that we trust you to take ownership of your work and see your projects through to completion.

You recognize the importance of design and enjoy working with designers to make products look, feel and work better. You enjoy refining the details because you understand that they add up to something greater.

Diversity and Inclusion

At Fluorescent, we believe that a diverse, inclusive company is a strong company. We encourage Indigenous people, women, people of colour, people with disabilities, members of LGBTQ+ community, and other under-represented groups to apply.

If you don’t meet all of our requirements exactly or have taken a non-traditional professional path we still want to hear from you! Use your cover letter to tell us about your unique experience – we understand that talent comes from many places and that skills are transferable.

Send a cover letter and resume to liam@fluorescent.co. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Headquarters: Nanaimo, BC

Front-end Developer (React/Javascript)
We’re on the hunt for a couple of front-end developers — people who nerd out on Javascript, making interfaces with React, and find real satisfaction crafting true-to-the-design CSS in components.

About Input
As a digital product agency, we revel in the joy of the craft and take pride in making apps that people love to use. We seek coworkers who are self-directed learners with enthusiasm, a can-do attitude, intuition for problem-solving, empathy, listening skills, kindness, and respect for diverse perspectives.

Our clients are mostly startups across industries like healthcare, well-being, insurance, finance, and productivity. We're into work/life balance, side projects, flexible hours, and avoiding unnecessary meetings. Our HQ is in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island, but we have teammates across Canada. We encourage remote and diverse candidates to apply, but are prioritizing Canadians at the moment.

About You
As the right person for the job, you have an impressive knowledge and curiosity about building things for the web. You have ideas for making your own products, or have already built one on the side. Writing components, managing state, working with API's, and trying new tools are all part of your workflow. You read the documentation out of habit, and are keen to explain difficult concepts to your teammates.

Your tool chest must include Javascript, React, HTML, and CSS - for bonus points, you've also worked with Python, Django, Postgres and/or Heroku. Most importantly, we value good coding fundamentals and a focus on shipping above all.

Next Steps
To apply, please shoot us an email with your resume and we will joyfully consider it.

Join a growing company you can be proud to work for, doing work you can be proud of with the tech you want to work with. If you’re capable of delivering a responsive user experience and making it interactive and rock-solid using Elm, we need you!

Why work for Bellroy?

A global company…

Bellroy has sold carry goods direct-to-consumer in 172 countries from warehouses on 4 continents.  We’ve made localization a first-class citizen of our internal e-commerce platform; we can pivot into new markets faster than any off-the-shelf platform can currently offer. Our site is translated into 9 languages, we sell to customers in 13 local currencies, with no duplication of configuration or content. We are constantly looking for new opportunities outside of our existing markets.

We have people that work with and for Bellroy in Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. Our remote team are a critical part of our business, and are treated as such. We ask our remote people to be available to overlap Melbourne office hours a few hours a day, but otherwise, we’re highly flexible when it comes to working hours. If you’re located in Melbourne and surrounds, we’re flexible about how much of your week is spent in our offices.

… that doesn’t suck

We have carefully built our culture of radical effectiveness. Our credo is "smart people with good intentions who get shit done" (yes, really). We have two awesome physical workspaces in Victoria, Australia - one in the heart of Melbourne’s Fitzroy, and a smaller workspace in Bells Beach. We try to get our local and remote people all together in the same space once or twice a year.

Bellroy’s mission is to inspire better ways to carry; use business as a force for good; and help the world – and our crew – flourish. We make great carry products that delight people in their everyday lives. We constantly innovate to improve the sustainability of our materials. We help our staff love their work and grow as people. We donate a portion of our revenue to some of the world’s most effective charities. We are a certified B Corporation.

Why work in the Bellroy Technology Team?

Striking the right balance…

At some companies, we observe a familiar and depressing pattern: the most technically excellent developers hit a ceiling beyond which they can’t progress unless they start taking on direct “reports”, and becoming “managers”. At Bellroy we love the people who want to make that transition, but we don’t think that it should be the only way to progress your career, and we make sure that we have a technical stream that allows people to keep getting better at programming. This is a role in that technical stream and we expect that you will continue to learn and master your craft while working at Bellroy.

We really like weekends. This is why throughout our codebases, we’re moving to static types and a functional-programming mindset. We’ve found that this has resulted in fewer bugs, less maintenance and less time spent writing tests that just check for dynamic type explosions. We’d rather have code that “just works” delivered a little later than code that “sometimes works” delivered a little sooner. We use Elm as our principal front-end framework and most of our greenfields projects are being written in Haskell. Though we still have a significant Ruby codebase, we are at the leading edge of Sorbet adoption and extensively use the dry-rb family of gems (especially dry-monads).

We have a culture of intellectual honesty. We foster a friendly atmosphere, but you will be challenged about decisions you make and “this is the way I’ve always done it” will not cut it. If you see this as the best way to develop your knowledge and learn from other perspectives, you’ll fit right in! If this sounds like your worst nightmare, maybe this isn’t the right team for you.

… while making great strides

We quite often get asked why we’d run our own e-commerce platform when there are so many in the marketplace. We’ve asked ourselves the same question every few years, evaluated the platforms and (so far) found them wanting. We have a world-class team across product design, creative, data science, logistics and production, and by working closely together we’re able to innovate in ways that we’re not seeing in the market. In this role you’ll be working closely with our creative and digital sales teams, as well as your Technology Team colleagues, to innovate in the delivery of new customer experiences on bellroy.com.

You can expect to learn a lot while you’re here. We have an allocated learning budget, hack days and company-wide learning events to support your development. The Technology Team runs a book club that meets weekly to read and discuss various titles, from Don’t Make Me Think to The Pragmatic Programmer to Losing The Signal.

You could be the one, if you...
  • Have a solid technical background in at least one user-facing Javascript framework, with an interest in the Elm language (experience and proficiency with Elm or Haskell will be very highly regarded)
  • Have solid experience in delivering high-quality user experiences in HTML, CSS and vanilla JS
  • Consistently deliver high-quality code with strong, well-researched design principles
  • Want to work alongside a highly competent technical team, supported by an excellent creative team of UI and graphic designers
  • Don’t work just to pay the bills, but also because you’re passionate about building great user experiences
  • Get excited about great books and the ideas you can lift from them – technical and non-technical books alike
  • Want to work for a company that cares about doing good things for the world

If that sounds good…

Press the apply button. You'll be taken to a page where you can attach a cover letter, resume and asked to complete a small coding exercise.

About Headway

Founded in 2015, Headway was born out of a passion to bring entrepreneurial ideas to market and keep them there. We work holistically with our client partners as a true extension of their product team, not just as the technical execution arm of their business. If we see something broken, whether that's a workflow, a marketing or messaging strategy, or a needless feature, we speak up, and our clients trust us to help them fix it.

Because we're more than just designers and developers, we achieve results that bring successful long-term partnerships and trusted referrals. We help entrepreneurs build a business ―not just an app. This approach, coupled with realistic and incremental software releases results in a friendly, fun, and collaborative atmosphere where our colleagues and clients both have room to learn and grow.

See how our clients talk about our approach and check out some of the recognition we've received so far. Discover how we show our clients appreciation with unique holiday gifts each year. Or, if you're a podcast fan, check out Seaworthy, where we explore ways to help companies grow and scale their business and ideas, and Even Keeled, podcast about the craft of creating software and effective development teams. We're excited about what we've achieved in the last few years, but we're just getting started. We need your help to take us to the next level!

A Day In The Life

During a typical work week, our crew members enjoy a balanced assignment of 35 hours on client projects with the ability to invest the other 5 hours on a combination of individual goals and team meetings. Twice a year, we take a full week away from client work to focus on team goals and internal project initiatives. These weeks alternate between a retreat style destination that encourages team bonding and goal setting, and a more focused week-long design and development sprint at our primary office in Wisconsin. Check out some of our team week recaps and years in review to get a feel for how much fun it is to work at Headway!

What Does Success Look Like?

During your first 2-4 weeks at Headway, you'll have an opportunity to meet with lots of crew members across the company and start to understand our unique approach to product development. This includes several "Headway 101" sessions that cover everything from our project management style, to our design aesthetic and business analysis approach, to development tools and techniques. If you're new to one of our tech stacks, we'll also create a customized trail of exercises to help get you up to speed. This training covers fundamentals of our core technologies, the way we delegate tasks within a development team, our git process and workflow, testing strategies, tips for successful client interactions, and much more.

After this initial period, you'll be successfully contributing to new feature work on a client project in the context of a team. You'll also be participating in daily standups, sprint planning meetings, and retrospectives. Welcome aboard!

Ongoing Support

Each week, you'll meet with your team lead to ensure that you have the time and attention you need to be successful. Your needs and questions will always come first in this meeting, but other topics discussed include:

  • Individual quarterly goal progress
  • Project status / team issues / weekly retro
  • Individual responses to our weekly team health questionnaire
Quarterly and Annual Reviews

In addition to weekly touch point meetings, more formal quarterly reviews are scheduled to discuss successes and areas for growth identified over the last 3 months. We have annual performance assessments and salary reviews, though we reserve the right to provide a merit based pay raise at any time. Most crew members achieve between a 2% and 5% raise each year within their same role, but bigger jumps are possible when roles or responsibilities increase. We're here to grow with you sustainably over the long term.

Experience and Results At Every Level

With an experienced leadership team encompassing design, development, sales, marketing, product, and operations, Headway is poised for an amazing 2021. Our business is guided by EOS and we have strong processes, documentation, and people to support your growth and development. As they say, “Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want to.” For more on that, check out our benefits!

Sydney, Australia - Remote: US/Australia We’re looking for a front-end heavy full-stack developer. The ideal candidate should consider themselves to be a front-end React “rock-star”.**Front-end skills:*** React experience is a must (Redux, Sagas and Dom Router experience desirable)...See more jobs at Upwire

The job

Our current solution is built on a React Native app for iOS and Android, and a React.js web front-end with game components developed in Unity. Our backend is based on Python, Elixir, Redis, PostgreSQL, and deployed with Docker, Chef and ECS on AWS. Our integration tests are written in Cypress and Appium.

Our tech department consists of nine developers (or at least it will after you have been hired), and is split between two four-person teams: the Live Experience team, and the Activation and Subscriptions team. You will be part of the Live Experience team, together with our experienced and dedicated full-stack and front-end developers. The team is responsible for creating a fun, interactive and engaging livestream experience that will keep our users coming back for more, with features like games and 3D races, live leaderboards, and seamless two-way interactions between instructor and user.

Due to the interactive and dynamic nature of our livestreams, the job will involve a number of unique challenges. The data we present literally changes second to second, and transitions and animations are a core part of the experience. The user will often be interacting with our product through both our web app (and in the future, Apple TV and smart tv apps) and our mobile app. This mix of live data and multiple interacting components presents some unique challenges for test automation. We hope you’re up for the challenge!

The team also manages the build processes for a number of important components, including our mobile apps and some backend stuff, so we hope you will help to take an active role in maintaining and improving these integral parts of our infrastructure

Who you are

You are an experienced QA engineer with a passion for delivering quality software and an intimate knowledge of the techniques and practices surrounding test automation. Your addition to the team will be essential for ensuring that our customers get a superb experience with our product, every time.

Maintaining our manual tests will be part of your job, so it is important that you are skilled and well-versed in test automation for both mobile and web. Experience with writing tests in JS using the Appium and Cypress frameworks is a big plus. We also maintain a battery of pure backend integration tests written in python, and while these tests are not the biggest test automation challenge in this job, it would be awesome if you were comfortable helping to maintain these tests, too.

You’ll also be up to the challenge of maintaining our build pipelines. For our web apps, that involves tweaking AWS Amplify config files and writing bash scripts, on top of the actual integration testing. For our mobile apps, the builds run on CircleCI, and you will need to be familiar with both Gradle, for android, and Fastlane for the iOS app build.See more jobs at Motosumo ApS

Our full stack engineers bridge the gap between backend data and the frontend websites of Yelp. Our goal is to provide the best user experience to millions of users and we’re excited to dive into any area of the web stack to make it happen.

Full stack engineers rarely have a typical day: One day you might be writing HTML/CSS/JavaScript and another you might be discussing the best approach making our web apps work in our service oriented architecture.

Yelp engineering culture is driven by
our values: we’re a cooperative team that values individual authenticity, and encourages “unboring” solutions to problems. We enable all new engineers to deploy working code their first week, and your impact will only grow from there with the support of your manager, mentor and team. At the end of the day, we are all about helping our users, growing as engineers, and having fun in a collaborative environment.

Where You Come In:

  • Design and build new features to connect Yelp with large scale businesses.

  • Implement beautiful layouts that work across all of Yelp’s platforms (desktop, mobile browsers, and mobile apps).

  • Deploy projects in a Service-Oriented Architecture, all the way from backend services to fully-featured UIs.

  • Run A/B experiments and dive into the resulting data to look for trends.

  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineering teams.

  • Mentor other engineers and share the skills you’ve learned.

What it Takes to Succeed:

  • Based or willing to relocate within United Kingdom

  • Deep understanding of at least one popular server side web framework (Django, Flask, Rails, Pyramid, Laravel, Express, etc.) or modern JS frontend framework (React, Angular, Ember, etc.)

  • Full-Stack engineering experience in Python, Ruby, JavaScript, Java, or C++.

  • Understanding of web security and performance best practices.

  • Comfortable working in a Unix Environment.

  • Experience with popular Python libraries/tools (Pyramid, pytest, tox, SQLAlchemy) is a plus

What We Offer:

  • Full responsibility for projects from day one, an awesome team, and a dynamic work environment

  • Competitive salary with equity in the company, a pension scheme, and an optional employee stock purchase program

  • 25 days paid holiday initially, rising to 29 with service

  • Private health insurance, including dental and vision

  • Flexible working hours and meeting-free Wednesdays

  • Regular 3-day Hackathons and weekly learning groups, always with interesting topics

  • Opportunities to participate in events and conferences throughout Europe and the US

  • £58 per month toward any exercise of your choice

Yelp values diversity. We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and consider qualified applicants without regard to Race/Ethnic Origin, Sex, Religion/Belief, Disability, Age, Sexual Orientation. Note: Yelp does not accept agency resumes. Please do not forward resumes to any recruiting alias or employee. Yelp is not responsible for any fees related to unsolicited resumes.

We built Metabase because existing tools for business intelligence didn’t feel like things we wanted to use. We wanted faster, simpler ways to ask questions about data, and wanted to strip away the colder feel of most Enterprise software. Folks seemed to agree, and now Metabase is used daily by tens of thousands of companies to give people in all sorts of roles access to insights they wouldn’t have otherwise had. None of this could happen without our user interface and that’s where you come in. We’re looking for someone with strong product sensibilities, extraordinarily good frontend skills, and solid software engineering fundamentals to join our team to advance the state of the art in our product and our industry.

Why choose Metabase

  • The problems we face are genuinely interesting and aren’t trivial. Data influences so much of our world but isn’t that easy to interact with or understand. You’ll make tools that people rely on for their real jobs.
  • You’ll get to work in open source and get feedback directly from users and customers out in the open.
  • The company is growing and so is the business. We’re adding new remote team members from around the world and improving our processes. It’s an exciting time and you can really have an impact on how things work here.
  • We’ve tried to design our work environment to fit into real life. Work is only one part of who you are, so we emphasize reasonable workdays and prefer planning and avoiding panic. People at Metabase have families, dogs, plants, and lives outside of work and we try to support that however we can.\

What we’re looking for:

  • You care about crafting delightful user experiences. You like to write code to enable people to do something and you understand that details and things like copy matter. If your focus is only on code this might not be the best role for you.
  • Prior experience shipping non-trivial apps using React + Redux (or equivalent). Our front end is written in React (surprise!), so you’ll need really strong React and JavaScript knowledge to build fast and thoughtful user interfaces.
  • You have experience writing tests, giving good feedback on other people’s code, and writing proposals for more complicated problems that are thoughtful and clear. As we’re a remote company (even outside of pandemics) communication and clarity are really important.
  • Due to the nature of what we work on, computer science-y problems come up frequently. We’re not picky about a specific degree or accolade, but you’ll be expected to write fast and performant code and deal with a fair bit of data structure manipulation regularly.
  • We like everyone to care about the nuts and bolts of how to make things look good, so you’ll be expected to use our style guide and if necessary write or update our CSS, so comfort in CSS and familiarity with things like design systems and component libraries is a necessity.
  • You’ve worked on a large and complex JavaScript project. Metabase is a big product and code base so the ability to adapt existing code and integrate new code into established systems is important and you should feel comfortable digging in.

Not essential, but nice to have:

  • Knowledge and prior experience with data visualization (especially if it has involved dc.js and d3.js).
  • Previous contributions to open source (not a requirement, but a huge plus).
  • Either pre-existing knowledge or interest in learning some Clojure, the language much of the backend of our application is written in.

The types of problems you'd get to work on:

  • Lightning fast interaction with data. Think things like letting people see all the orders that came in from a specific region by clicking directly on a custom map of their sales regions and then letting them filter that list visually by directly interacting with the data table - and all of this happening in a responsive and delightful way.
  • Augmenting visualizations. To allow for people to further institutional knowledge, build the feature to allow annotations directly on specific data points in a line chart, and then determine how to expose those when it makes sense across dashboards and the entire app.
  • Wayfinding. We want to make sure people don’t have to do work that’s already been done, so build new ways to surface important metrics or segments to the right users across Metabase.
  • Embedded analytics. We have customers who deliver analytics to their own users via our embed product. You’d get to tackle the problem of making sure those can match their own products visually and enable easier integration of the embeds into their own code.
