Summer 2021 Lead Instructor

Breakthrough New York [1] is a tuition-free college success program that makes a ten-year commitment to highly motivated, low-income middle school students. We support our students on their pathway to college by providing academic enrichment and guidance from middle school through college graduation, including a rigorous summer program while they are still in middle school. Traditionally, our unique “students teaching students” model focuses on selecting and training exceptional college students to serve as Teaching Fellows in our summer program, inspiring them to pursue careers in education. Because our Summer 2021 Program will be held virtually, our academic classes (math, science, literature, writing) will be led by Lead Instructors with the support of a college-aged Teaching Assistant (TA).

Lead Instructor Position Description

Lead Instructors ensure the successful instruction of their academic course. Breakthrough hires Lead Instructors to teach their subject course to one grade level for our 4.5 week-long summer program. Lead Instructors are experienced and successful professional teachers who oversee all aspects of their virtual classroom, including curriculum mapping, lesson planning, grading, and managing their Teaching Assistant. Exemplary Lead Instructors are experts in their specific content areas, are able to mentor their TAs through effective planning and execution, and always hold TAs and students to the highest expectations.
