Digital Engagement Manager


Summary

Responsible for managing United Ways of California’s text messaging and social media infrastructure for a number of outreach programs benefiting low-income and vulnerable communities. The Digital Engagement Manager will work with United Ways of California’s (UWCA) staff and external partners to ensure the successful and high-quality implementation of interactive text message, social media, email, and chat outreach campaigns to various California and national populations to allow us to share information about critical services and opportunities like: wildfire emergency response/preparedness, California Earned Income Tax Credit, affordable broadband internet, rental assistance, direct financial assistance, and others. Provides communications, outreach design, and consultation to program managers to help meet program goals and grant deliverables. The Digital Engagement Manager will be the primary point of contact for all of UWCA’s SMS-text based and data projects. 

Major Responsibilities and Duties 

1. Develop and implement strategy for digital engagement function and capability overall, in collaboration with UWCA program staff.

2. Provide consultation to UWCA program staff as they develop messaging for text, social, and other communications platforms in coherence with the developed digital engagement strategy. 

3. Serve as the primary point of contact for text-based projects for UWCA program staff as well as external partners, such as funders, network and coalition leaders seeking to establish text message campaigns. 

4. Work directly with program managers and UWCA staff, consultants, and technical assistance providers to design and coordinate multiple text message systems and campaigns and to share and gather information according to grant deliverables. Examples include messages to individuals to take an action such as like filing their taxes to receive tax credits, receiving rental assistance, adopting affordable broadband, and the like. Some campaigns are to conduct consumer-satisfaction follow-up surveys after individuals received services.

5. Input developed messaging for social and text into automated systems for scheduled release via social media publishing platforms.

6. In emergency situations, respond quickly to develop text communication messaging for things like wildfires and COVID-19, to rapidly respond to situations and share information from trusted sources.

7. Determine information systems loop for projects. Sort and analyze information and data generated by individuals’ responses to text prompts. Determine effectiveness of messaging and work with Data & Outreach Analyst to perform other summary analysis based on data. 

8. Develop documentation to provide information and guidance to UWCA staff and partners about infrastructure, processes, and procedures related to texting and system projects. 

9. Generate clear written and narrative reports on text outreach outcomes, success/response rates, and compile aggregated, de-personalized consumer information for reporting to funders and other entities. 

10. Compose, edit, and update text message “flows” through provided software for the UWCA 211-211 interactive text message system

11. Assist with the development and improvement of a ‘chat bot’ to improve the interactive SMS system. 

12. Ensure that messages are sent out based on schedule for key dates. 

13. Track progress towards deliverable grant objectives.

Organizational Duties

1. Work collaboratively with program managers, communications, and data management staff to ensure that messaging is effective and meets stated goals.

2. Attend regular staff meetings and have general knowledge about program functions and goals, of which text outreach will be a part. 

3. Report on text message response rates, effectiveness, gathered consumer information based on data available through UWCA systems.

4. Assisting in the preparation of specified grant reports as requested in a timely manner.

Job Qualifications

1. BA/BS degree required.

2. Excellent project management skills, including the ability to multi-task under deadlines and work under pressure. Set timelines for projects as well for self and others. Resilient. Ability to efficiently manage time and workload. 

3. Five-plus years of work experience in nonprofit services and/or outreach is required. A focus on immigrant and/or non-English speaking populations is preferred.

4. Strong English writing skills. Ability to speak and write in additional languages are a plus. 

5. Familiarity with text messaging and text message outreach in English/Spanish is a plus. 

6. Familiarity with data management, analytics, databases, and the presentation of summary data visually and verbally. 

7. Must show initiative to work creatively and independently to accomplish goals. Technical assistance, trainings, and learning resources will be made available to help an experienced outreach worker develop, utilize, and improve new systems.

8. Subject to public health shelter-in-place requirements, periodic travel required throughout state, including visits to local United Ways and partner sites, as well as meetings around the state with collaborative partners. Reimbursement for travel costs provided.

9. Strong interpersonal communication skills and emotional intelligence, and ability to work collaboratively with many stakeholders.

10. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including drafting issue briefs, reports and public speaking. Bilingual in Spanish or other language/s is a plus.

11. Excellent judgment and problem-solving ability. 

12. Ability to think and work independently, and do so diligently in a virtual office environment, with significant use of phone, email, Slack, and other tools to accomplish workload. 

13. Proficiency with computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs and comfortable working with internet applications, including social media.

14. Strong ethical backbone, willingness to make extra effort to do the right thing. 

Time

Full-time, 40 hours a week.
