TREC’s Vision and Mission

TREC has a vision of leaders, organizations, and diverse coalitions working effectively for environmental protection, conservation, and sustainability in Western North America. TREC cultivates effectiveness by providing premier capacity-building services, delivered in-depth and over time.

TREC’s Approach

TREC provides coaching, consulting, and training in leadership development, staff management, strategic planning, coalition and campaign management, fundraising, fiscal management, and board development. Through site visits, one-on-one consulting, coaching, and training, TREC partners with the organization’s leaders, staff, board, and other key stakeholders to enhance their strengths, shore up any weaknesses, and generally expand the group’s effectiveness and sustainability. TREC focuses our efforts on partnering with our clients to increase the effectiveness of leaders, build more inclusive teams and cultures, and expand the impact, engagement, and diversity of coalitions and collaborations.

TREC's service engagements range from one or two months to several years. Each organization is unique, and therefore our approach is highly customized. By focusing our work entirely on the environmental community in North America, we understand the political and economic climate that leaders face. We also know that groups cannot work in isolation, and we support them in being effective collaborators and having the skills to work with diverse stakeholders. Most of our clients are grassroots organizations, working at the local and state/province-level, and some at a regional level. Because our work is grant-funded, our staff are not required to recruit new clients and bring in consulting fees. Our grant funding is stable, allowing our staff to focus on innovation and continually improving the services we provide.

TREC’s Approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

TREC has a deep responsibility to actively leverage our resources and capabilities to amplify diversity, inclusion, and equity in ourselves, in our operation, in our services, with our clients, and in our sector.

Foundational to TREC’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) framework is the assumption that systems change is driven by the behaviors and decisions of individuals and that those individuals make up the organizations that ultimately establish the system of conservation as a whole.

TREC centers DEI work on the understanding that individuals bring a myriad of identities and lived experiences. Sustainable equity work values all expressions of diversity that span race, gender, culture, values, and social identity groups. It also recognizes existing injustices, the harm caused by these injustices and commits to confronting oppressive systems that prevent positive systems change. To that end, TREC’s DEI services reflect a range of approaches from individual development and accountability to organizational culture change.

Senior Associate’s Job Scope

The Senior Associate, DEI leads TREC’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programming as part of TREC’s Organizational Effectiveness Program. The scope of the position is two-fold:

Program Oversight and Staff Supervision

The Senior Associate provides vision and strategic direction of TREC’s client-facing DEI programming as a member of TREC’s Organizational Effectiveness team. The Senior Associate leads the evolution of TREC’s DEI client services strategy and develops and oversees TREC’s DEI training and consulting programs. Also, the Senior Associate provides support and supervision to the DEI Associate.

Client Engagement

The Senior Associate develops and delivers DEI trainings and resources that are broadly available to TREC clients on a range of foundational DEI topics. Additionally, they provide in-depth consulting services to a handful of TREC clients, including assessments, training for board and staff teams, and supporting clients in designing and implementing DEI organizational development plans. Clients are identified in conjunction with the Executive Director and Organizational Effectiveness team. The Senior Associate determines and designs the scope of DEI services provided to each client based on organizational need, staff capacity, and change readiness. Services are delivered over the phone, online, and onsite. Some training and consulting services are co-delivered with other members of the Organizational Effectiveness team and/or the DEI Associate.
