Position Overview

The Accountant is an important part of the Finance team and is responsible for managing and implementing accounting tasks and processes in accordance with financial policies and accounting standards (GAAP). This position requires non-profit accounting with strong full-charge bookkeeping/accounting skills, experience in the nonprofit sector, the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines, good judgment, and adaptability.

General Accounting

  • Ensure accounting efficiency, accuracy and timeliness
  • Maintain systems and controls to verify the integrity of processes, and data
  • Ensure internal controls are maintained
  • Maintain an efficient and effective tracking and reporting system in QB
  • Perform monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statement close control procedures
  • Manage all GL accounts, adjusting or correcting journal entries. Ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled monthly and supported with valid detail
  • Complete month-end closing checklist, including checking, investment and credit card reconciliations
  • Ensure accruals are appropriately made each month
  • Assist with monthly financial statement preparation
  • Assist with annual audits (including schedule and financial reports development), 990 preparation, and funder audits
  • Ensure complete and accurate tax compliance and tax accounting; Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Prepare monthly WA B&O tax return; quarterly L&I returns, other financial returns as required
  • Ensure proper functional expense allocation entries
  • Support budget process as needed
  • Assist in other bookkeeping and accounting functions and processes as needed

AR

  • Work with the accounting team to close accounting periods; maintain close calendars
  • Receive and record tuition payments; reconcile with customer accounts daily and m/e
  • Fixed assets records including depreciation
  • Invoice payers as required
  • Process cash receipts

AP

  • Manage the full cycle of monthly payroll, payroll journal entries, including analyzing and reconciling payroll related general accounts
  • Reviews G/L coding on invoices before checks are released to ensure accurate coding
  • Perform weekly check run and mail checks to vendors
  • Process account payables and set up new vendors in the system
  • Work with vendors and staff to resolve invoice discrepancies
  • Maintain W-9 information for all vendors; manage 1099’s

Payroll, Benefits

  • Manage bi-weekly payroll processing
  • Update employee HRIS information as needed
  • Process bi-weekly retirement contributions
  • Manage other employee benefit entries, processing, and documentation
  • Coordinate annual W2s, ACA reporting, etc.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • 5+ years of full cycle non-profit bookkeeping/accounting, fund accounting experience
  • Advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP)
  • Non-profit accounting and FAS
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with Functional Expense Allocation
  • Advanced experience with QuickBooks
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with ADP and automated payroll systems
  • CPA certification - a plus but not required
  • Governmental accounting cost allocation principles; e.g. OMB 122, 110
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to critically analyze data and processes
  • Advanced MS Excel skills; strong computer skills, including all Microsoft Office products
  • Excellent attention to detail in a fast-paced accounting environment
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, and prioritize appropriately
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work with high volume of transactions and maintain high level of accuracy
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ten key proficiency
