Mothers Out Front seeks an experienced community organizer to lead organizational growth and support of volunteer leadership teams across Massachusetts. 

As senior organizer, you will help build and strengthen a diverse and powerful movement of mothers, grandmothers and caregivers stepping up in big ways to take action on climate change. You should be familiar with grassroots organizing that reflects a distributive leadership model, rich with volunteer training and development; experienced in local and statewide issue campaigns; and grounded in values of racial justice, equity and inclusion. 

As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, all of our organizing has moved to a virtual approach until it is safe for us to do in-person meetings and travel again.

Job Summary:

Department: Organizing

Reports to: MA Organizing Manager

The Massachusetts Senior Organizer will lead one or more statewide campaigns to reduce fossil fuel emissions and pave the way to a just, sustainable economy. Much of this work will be done in partnership with other organizations, but you will be responsible for engaging Mothers Out Front members and cultivating their leadership through this/these campaign/s. 

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

Campaign Coordination: 

  • Work with a team of volunteers in to develop and launch a campaign plan, building on our successful Beyond Gas initiative. This statewide campaign will likely include broad public education about the health risks of fracked gas and sustained grassroots advocacy for policy and regulations to move Massachusetts off gas to safer, healthier energy sources. Another emerging area of focus is protecting and enhancing soil and trees, to offset the carbon pollution that already is wrecking our climate.  Members will chose priority campaigns in an assembly in March 2021. You will be in a position to help shape the campaign/s and ensure that goals and tactics maximize opportunities for mothers and care givers to engage and strengthen their skills -- whether they give 20 minutes or 20 hours per week.
  • Serve as lead staff to member-led Legislative Team, which will continue to engage MOF community teams and other supporters around key policy goals. 
  • Working with National Data Administrator, develop a mechanism to track participation and leadership development in state campaigns and legislative work.

Communications 

  • Serve as MA lead staff member for all communications about statewide campaigns and legislative actions. 
  • Identify key members of campaign team/s and legislative team to receive training and coaching to take on key communication roles. 
  • Work with national communications staff, MA organizing staff and member-led communications team to ensure that MA statewide and legislative campaigns are regularly featured and updated on our website and social media platforms. 

Member education and leadership development 

  • In collaboration with member-leaders, educate Mothers Out Front members and supporters about our state priorities by coordinating workshops and webinars and producing educational materials.
  • Develop toolkits and resources to support campaign organizing;
  • Collaborate with member-leaders to ensure ongoing training and leadership development of members. This may include the identification and recruitment of participants for training opportunities, including Mothers Out Front’s Leadership Academy.

Experience, Knowledge and Abilities 

  • At least 3 years of experience in grassroots, labor or campaign organizing, including a background in leadership identification and development; 
  • Strong background in working with member-led teams to coordinate campaigns and achieve results.
  • An understanding of strategic issue campaign development, ideally at the statewide and municipal level, including attention to collaborative goal-setting, power-building, tactics that influence decision-makers, building effective teams, and the use of public narrative and story-telling in campaign organizing.
  • Demonstrated ability for “systems thinking,” or an ability to move new ideas and practices through an evolving network. 
  • High creativity and strategic action. An ability to thrive in a dynamic, goal-oriented, fast-paced, campaign-oriented environment. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Professional communication experience a plus! 
  • Bi-lingual Spanish-English a plus!
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with people from a variety of backgrounds, especially different ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It’s also helpful if you have experience working with people from different religious, educational, generational, and gender identity backgrounds as well as those with physical disabilities and from the LGBTQ community.
  • Ability to work remotely and be productively self-directed and personally organized.
  • The ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed;
  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to travel into Boston and across the state regularly and to out-of-state meetings for 3-5 days duration two times per year.

Details: We are a virtual organization and candidates may be based anywhere in Massachusetts. You will work from a home office and will need access to reliable transportation for meetings across the state. During the pandemic and while the stay-at-home requirements are in place, our staff will not be doing any in-person meetings or travel. This a full-time job and reports to the MA Organizing Manager. 

Salary and benefits: The salary range is $56,650 to $66,950, depending on experience. Benefits include health and dental benefits, a 401(k) plan, flexible spending plan, paid vacation, holidays, sick days, and support for remote work set-up. We offer ongoing training opportunities, a fast-paced, dynamic, supportive, and collaborative setting and we are proudly women-led!
