Position Summary:

This position is on the Regional Impact (RI) team at LEE. The RI team is comprised of field staff all over the country responsible for the recruitment, development and coaching of members across multiple pathways - including policy, advocacy, community organizing and elected leadership. The Regional Impact team is charged with building a robust and active movement of members advancing educational equity in the community, a strong member to member network and a critical mass of members leading in key positions at influential organizations and bodies across the region.

LEE is looking for a highly strategic, collaborative and innovative leader to manage a portfolio of 6-8 regions (each led by a Director of Regional Impact) to drive impact in those regions while playing a critical leadership role on the Regional Impact team. Senior Directors achieve impact by coaching the directors in their portfolio, empowering their leadership, serving as a strategic thought partner and leader, and collaborating with staff across LEE.

The Senior Director reports to Vice President, Regional Impact and sits on the Regional Impact Leadership Team (RILT). As a member of the RILT, the Senior Director partners to develop the team’s strategies, helps manage the team’s impact and performance, including goal setting at the team level and supporting regional goal and vision setting, ensures there are strong internal operational systems, and works to build an inclusive and development-oriented culture. The Senior Director will work across LEE teams, enhancing alignment between the National Impact team and other partner teams, and also is responsible for special projects that build innovations across the organization. 

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in strategy, analysis, project management, and cross-team management towards complex goals. They should be familiar with all of LEE’s pathways - Policy & Advocacy, Community Organizing and Elected Leadership - while having strong experience in either community organizing or elected leadership.

Position Location: Flexible

Travel Requirements:  50% including travel to regions in portfolio, team conferences, and some national workshops (once organization-wide travel resumes)

Responsibilities:

60%: Regional Portfolio Management (6-7 Directors of Impact and their regional teams; specific regions to be determined)

  • Support Directors in setting vision, identifying goals, scope of work, and strategy; coach and develop regional teams, which in some cases requires managing through layers, to maximize their impact
  • Manage each regional team to meet and exceed regional member engagement, Elected Leadership/candidate recruitment goals, Policy & Advocacy relationships, and collective action turnout/engagement goals 
  • Achieve demonstrated growth in pipelines and leaders across the regional portfolio with an eye on increasing impact over time in region
  • Support innovation in regions to significantly increase the amount of members engaging with LEE, saturation of the power map and to strengthen the member to member network
  • Regularly (i.e., 3-4x/yr) visit each region to support regional program execution, eg, collective action work, candidate coaching and recruitment, etc, and support staff leadership development (when travel resumes) (in the interim, the Senior Director should have the availability to support and observe virtual events across different time zones)
  • Effectively track and manage the progress and workstreams of a portfolio of direct reports through use of Salesforce, google tools, and other reporting avenues
  • Coach and develop staff, maintaining a highly effective and professionally satisfied team rooted in principles of diversity, equity and inclusion; lead hiring processes for vacant team positions
  • Serve as a thought partner and advisor to Directors of Regional Impact in developing strategies that help our members in elected policy, organizing and advocacy work together to change education policies

30%: Partnership & Collaboration

  • Partner with members of the National Impact team to ensure alignment in strategy, planning and execution of strategy with the RI team
  • Play an active role on the RI Leadership Team to enact the team’s vision and strategy, and helping to drive strategic improvements
  • Share learnings across the team; where there are successes in regions, tease out underlying lessons to maximize learnings and resources across the team

10%: Special Projects

  • As determined in partnership with the Vice President, Regional Impact

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of relevant professional experience, managing complex workstreams towards successful outcomes, building successful relationships with a variety of stakeholders, and leading to equity-driven policy changes
  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate work experience 
  • Working knowledge and baseline skills in elected leadership, policy and advocacy, and community organizing strategy, with 4+ years of experience and demonstrated level of proficiency in elected leadership or community organizing specifically 
  • Deep passion for educational equity and belief in LEE’s mission and theory of change
  • Highly effective communication, coaching and team building skills, with demonstrated experience across lines of difference
  • Demonstrated expertise and success driving teams to goals and impact
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate within a geographically dispersed team
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and develop strategies to drive policy change
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MPA, MPP, JD, MBA, or PhD) in a relevant field 
  • Demonstrated success in innovative practices that leverage resources and enable significant growth
  • 3+ years of team management experience
  • Management of geographically dispersed team, with evidence of strong team culture and outcomes
