Engineering Director - DevOps

Job Summary

Our internal tools and infrastructure team continually increases the effectiveness and velocity of the technology team at Urbint. We work with the product-facing engineering teams to improve their efficiency and allow them to spend more of their time focused on customers' needs.  We also build and maintain our production environment.  We aspire to make sensible technology choices that enable us to scale our  production deployments to support some of the largest companies in the utility space.  Scalability, security, automation and flexibility are key to our success.

What You'll Do

  • Manage and scale a talented team of DevOps, SRE and platform engineers who support our development teams in ensuring high reliability for Utility’s mission critical applications
  • Drive the vision and strategy for our platform working in close collaboration with product management, customer success and the engineering teams
  • Coach and mentor the individuals in the team
  • Maintain infrastructure and operations such as build tooling, CI pipelines, and cloud infrastructure
  • Automate common tasks such as provisioning infrastructure, managing access, and responding to incidents
  • Build and own internal libraries and tooling that standardizes solutions and decreases rework across the technology organization.
  • Write documentation for internal tools, libraries, and workflows 
  • Drive work to identify and remedy shared pain points across the engineering team
  • Drive improvements to infrastructure and core system observability and recoverability

 Who You Are

  • You have 8+ years of experience managing DevOps engineering teams
  • You have experience scaling DevOps infrastructure for an early stage product
  • You’re passionate about simplicity as an approach to solving difficult infrastructure problems -- the simpler the solution the better
  • You’re passionate about building resilient infrastructure for customers and making developers more effective and efficient
  • You have experience building a strong team culture within a distributed team
  • You have a strong understanding of Linux-based cloud infrastructure
  • You have experience using, debugging, and tuning relational databases such as PostgreSQL 
  • You're comfortable doing user research with developers to identify pain points and areas to improve in internal tooling, workflow, and process
  • You have experience in and passion for designing and iterating on internal APIs (not just HTTP APIs, but also libraries)
  • You have an understanding of monitoring and observability of applications
  • You know how to celebrate and learn from failure as much as you do success

Nice To Have

  • Experience using and automating Google Cloud Platform
  • Experience working with declarative infrastructure tools such as Terraform and Kubernetes
  • Experience with Nix or other declarative build system such as Bazel
  • Experience with Python or other dynamically-typed interpreted language
  • Experience with website frontend technologies such as Javascript, React, and/or Clojurescript
