Organization Overview

Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) is a transnational network of grantmakers committed to strengthening Latino communities across the Americas. HIP connects and convenes funders, nonprofits, researchers, and other leaders to identify emerging needs among Latinos as well as best practices for responsive and effective funding of social change. HIP pioneers new philanthropic models by leading collaborative initiatives and has provided grants and training to help build the capacity of more than 600 organizations and leaders.

The majority of HIP’s funding comes from foundation grants, and in a typical year the organization is managing over 30 grant contracts.


Position Summary

The Grant Writer will report to the Development Director and will be responsible for writing grant reports, grant proposals, research briefings, and other writing projects as needed to support the needs of the organization. The ideal candidate is a skilled writer and editor with demonstrated experience in grant writing, impeccable attention to detail, and strong organizational skills. 

This is a full-time position preferably based in HIP’s headquarters in Oakland, CA but remote candidates will be considered including in Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, D.C. 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Manage the grant writing and reporting process including conducting background research, researching and drafting proposals and reports, and coordinating the review and submission process; 
  • Serve as lead writer for general grants, and support program staff in writing and editing program-specific grant reports;
  • Work with development and program staff to define outcomes and indicators for each new grant received, and develop systems to track those deliverables, to ensure that HIP is meeting its obligations to its funding partners;
  • Manage grant data and monitor the grant reporting schedule in Salesforce, ensuring team members are apprised of upcoming deadlines and that deliverables are completed on time; 
  • Other writing projects as needed to support the Programs and Development teams. This could include assisting with evaluation reports, research briefings for funders to learn about Latino issues, blog posts, press releases, etc; and 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in grant writing;
  • Demonstrated experience writing complex material, managing proposal submission processes, and grant compliance;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, and ability to manage grant attachments and grant proposal requirements;
  • Ability to participate in all aspects of the organization and synthesize and translate what you learn verbally and in writing;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple projects at the same time and ability to manage high-pressure situations; 
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships across departments and work remotely with virtual teams across the U.S. and in Mexico City; and
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Desired

  • Familiarity with foundations and grantmaking institutions, intermediary philanthropy, and the role of philanthropy support organizations;
  • Experience in Salesforce, Google Suite, Monday.com and Slack; and
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position requires five or more hours per day sitting in an office on a computer. Occasional evening and weekend availability and overnight travel may be required.
