Project Accountant


Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of bats and their habitats in America and around the world, seeks a Project Accountant to join its Operations Team.

BCI is a growing organization its impact and size. BCI has recently launched a new strategic plan, branding, and several new projects in the United States and beyond. The organization budget has grown from $4 million to $8 million over the last four years.

BCI is largely a virtual organization with satellite offices in Washington, DC, and Austin, TX. The Project Accountant can work remotely. Candidates in the Washington, DC, and Austin, TX metropolitan areas have the option to work in the office.


Position Description

  • The project accountant position is accountable for monitoring the program and project expenses and reporting, investigating variances, approving expenses, and ensuring that programs and project billings are issued and payments collected.
  • The project accountant has functionality responsibility for cost center creation, project accounting, grants accounting, accounts receivables/invoicing, time reporting, and expense reporting.
  • The Project Accountant works closely with BCI program and project staff to ensure their program and project level reporting needs are met, and that program and project staff have a solid understanding grant, time, and expense reporting policies and processes.
  • The Project Accountant maintains and improves proper systems, procedures, and internal controls to support effective project reporting, grant reporting, accounts receivables/invoicing, time reporting, and expense reporting.
  • The Project Accountant ensures timely and accurate cost center account creation/close out, time reporting, expense reporting, grant reporting, grantor/donor invoicing, and indirect cost recovery entries. The Project Accountant authorizes the transfer of expenses in and out of cost center accounts.
  • The Project Account maintains project-related records including, including contracts and change orders.
  • The Project Accountant supports monthly and quarterly program, project, and grant financial reporting and invoicing. The Project Accountant supports ad-hoc analysis on items such as multi-year project and grant forecasting.
  • The Project Accountant supports key accounting activities through the fiscal year. This includes the organizational budget process, ongoing forecasting and variance analysis, and audit support.
  • The Project Accountant works closely with the Operations team. They will support special projects and tasks as needed for the Operations team, such as maintaining BCI’s charitable registrations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general accounting principles and practices, budget management, accounting report generation, and utilization, and financial analysis.  
  • Intermediate to an advanced level working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Office products.

Preferred Knowledge/Experience: 

  • 1-3 years of progressive experience in accounting and/or auditing, including 1-3 years of experience in managing day-to-day accounting activities
  • 1 year of experience in mission-driven, nonprofit organizations subject to federal grants rules and regulations compliance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of grants management and invoicing.
  • Experience with financial management software, with Abila MIP, preferred.
