Overview

Common Future [1] is a network of remarkable leaders in the U.S. and Canada who work deeply within their communities to create alternative approaches to business, philanthropy, and investing. Our network is made up of local economy leaders, place-based foundation professionals, and impact investors who are poised to share knowledge, expertise, and resources. We envision an economy where wealth is redistributed, power is democratized, and economic control is shifted to marginalized communities. We work as a think and do tank that enables collaboration, ideation, and adoption of economic models that empower communities that have been the most marginalized. We are a 19 person organization (and growing). Our culture values equity [2], collaboration, intellectual curiosity, and experimentation.

Position Responsibilities

We are at an exciting point of growth in our organization. Due to the unprecedented circumstances of this past year including COVID [3] and the Movement for Black Lives [4], we have fully stepped into our role as an intermediary working to shift power and resources to our network of Black, Indigenous, people of color, Southern, and rural organizations. The Managing Director (MD) will capitalize on this success and work in partnership with the CEO and our enterprising team to create and scale a new investment entity that advances our efforts to change the structures, terms, rules, and norms of impact investing to better serve our communities.

This is a highly entrepreneurial position. The MD will report directly to the CEO and will serve as part of the Executive Team. Current responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategic Leadership and Team Management

  • Oversee development and implementation of the organization's short to long term impact investment strategy, including participatory investing and place-based approaches. Define big bet goals [5]. Plan, align, and hold teams accountable to them
  • Lead consulting services for foundations, corporations, and individuals to drive capital to Black, Indigenous, people of color, Southern, and rural communities
  • Empower and grow a highly entrepreneurial and engaged team to meet key objectives, starting with two direct reports
  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight on the design and development of funds and other vehicles for deployment of blended investment capital to address needs and opportunities in BIPOC communities, while ensuring compliance with regulatory laws
  • Develop and oversee a business model and strategy for consulting services
  • Guide and coach team members on consulting engagements and due diligence into investments and prospective partnership opportunities
  • Collaborate with Fundraising Team to lead on raising blended investment capital
  • Contribute to Common Future’s thought leadership (writing, speaking, and social media presence) to support fund development and field leadership in the sector

Executive Team Responsibilities

  • Serve on the senior leadership team and help set organizational priorities and budget
  • Provide thought partnership to Fundraising and Finance Teams to further strengthen the financial sustainability of the organization
  • Contribute to workforce planning and approving new areas of work as needed
  • Ensure cross department collaboration and communication

Desired Qualifications

  • Proven track record of success in organizational management. Senior leadership or equivalent preferred
  • Established thought leader in the field of impact investing or community economic development
  • Passion and experience in addressing economic injustices, closing the racial wealth gap, and systems change
  • Experience creating innovative, community centered financial vehicles and models, highly desired
  • Experience utilizing anti-racist and participatory practices in development of products and practices related to impact investing
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting, developing and empowering effective remote teams, with a high standard of excellence and accountability
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders across different geographies and subject areas
  • Exceptional strategic thinking skills, with a high level of intellectual curiosity
  • Experience as a founder or entrepreneur preferred, with an enthusiasm for working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Willingness, interest, and capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower leaders from the bottom up, cultivate a culture of initiative and learning, and understand the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to position people to succeed
  • Strong written communication skills that include the ability to assess and analyze investment approaches and share findings with internal and external audiences
