Position Title: State Campaign Director 

Position Location: Washington, D.C., Brooklyn, N.Y. preferred. Remote possible, within the US.

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a full-time State Campaign Director. 

About CPD + CPDA

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with more than 53 affiliates in 34 states and Puerto Rico, and build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position

We are seeking a talented campaigner who will help win state-level policies, particularly in the area of economic justice. Winning these policies will require many activities, including collaborating deeply with CPD affiliate organizations and their partners and CPD national staff in our campaigns, base building, and political departments; analyzing and writing campaign strategies and plans; actualizing on a deep knowledge base around key economic justice issues and possibly others; and being an advocate for the priority campaigns. 

The State Campaign Director will report to the Chief of Campaigns.

Primary Responsibilities

The State Campaign Director will:

  • In the 2020 legislative cycle, the Director will focus on winning economic justice policies, both legislatively and administratively, in AZ, NV, PA, FL, NC, MD, VA and MI and help develop campaigns in other states, as capacity allows.
  • This position works directly with affiliates to help them develop and implement their campaigns in the context of state power planning and provide any potential resources to facilitate winning while base building. 
  • This position collaborates with other national policy and legal allies that focus on state-level policy change and when appropriate, local campaigns, to share strategies, leverage each others’ resources, and work together towards shared goals. 
  • This position collaborates with other CPD Departments, in particular with other Campaign Directors who are driving other issue campaigns (particularly on democracy), in the same states to ensure full coordination and implementation. It will also coordinate with national partners. 
  • Over time, the Director will build a State Campaign Program at CPD which will excel at providing strategy, communications, fundraising and other expertise and resources to affiliates to win progressive policies over time both to set new policy standards across the country. 

Job Requirements 

  • Preferably at least 10 years experience in issue/policy campaigning;
  • Experience driving issue/policy campaigns in more than one jurisdiction (ex. you've run or significantly supported a state campaign in at least two states, or you've run national, state and municipal campaigns);
  • Policy understanding from a campaigns perspective (extra preference for experience in economic justice and democracy policy and campaigns);
  • Experience working with grassroots base-building community organizations;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social, racial and economic justice;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including diplomacy and discretion in dealings with others;
  • Excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills;
  • Attention to detail as well as the big picture
  • Ability to work well independently and to drive projects to completion in a fast-paced environment;
  • Dedication to organizational excellence;
  • Problem-solving perspective;
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.

Salary and Benefits:

This is a union position. Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $95,000-$110,000 and category 4. The Collective Bargaining Agreement is available here. [1]
