Remote After School Program Teaching Fellow 🔥

ABOUT US AND OUR PHILOSOPHY

Breakthrough Greater Boston (BTGB) is a transformative college access and teacher training program. BTGB offers six years of academic enrichment and college preparation to middle school and high school students with high potential but limited opportunities. Simultaneously, BTGB recruits, trains and inspires a diverse cohort of high achieving college students to become the next generation of urban teachers. Leveraging a Students Teaching Students model, BTGB provides engaging, tuition-free academic programming during the summer and after school. Our students gain the skills and motivation to succeed in rigorous high school courses and, ultimately, in college. Meanwhile, our teachers gain hands-on experience, research-based training and coaching from professional educators. Our team is diverse, high-performing and dedicated. We continue to build an organizational culture that emphasizes our core values for every member of our community:

  • Spirit: We cherish and embody the youthful energy and spirit of our students and teachers
  • Continual Learning: Everyone in our community has something to learn and something to teach
  • Team Together: We all chip in to accomplish whatever is needed for our teammates and the broader organization
  • Student Centered: Our students are our first priority and our decisions center around what benefits our students
  • Equity and Opportunity: We value diversity of identity, background and thought. We treat everyone with dignity and respect
  • Excellence in Everything: We maintain high expectations for ourselves

REMOTE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM SUMMARY

BTGB is currently seeking a dynamic and talented team of college student Teaching Fellows with a passion for urban education to remotely teach weekly Exploration courses and support students academically during our After School Program. Teaching Fellows will be responsible for designing and delivering academic enrichment content in a structured and supportive zoom classroom setting consisting of 10-15 middle school students. Teaching Fellows will be paired in teams of two in order to support each classroom collaboratively and allow for breakout spaces, tech support and calls home as needed. Students will select a theme for the semester (STEM, Art, Social Justice, Humanities) and then be enrolled in 8 sessions with each Teaching Fellow planning and leading 4. With support from BTGB staff, Teaching Fellows will create 4 dynamic lessons for their Exploration and submit in advance for feedback. Following each Exploration course, Teaching Fellows will remain with students to support on homework and provide 1-1 academic tutoring as needed.

REMOTE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM FAQ

What are the dates and times for the remote fall semester?

· Week of October 12th – week of December 7th

· 1x a week commitment 3:15-5:15pm EST

· Faculty Check in (15 min) + Explorations (45 min) + Study Hall (30 min) + Faculty Meeting 4:45-5:15pm

· 7th grade on Tue. and 8th grade on Thur. (apply for one or both for the semester!)

What type of preparation work is there?

Teaching Fellows will be expected to attend 2 hours of remote training prior to the mid October start of program. Exploration title, overview and lesson 1 are due the first week of October. Each subsequent lesson is due one week in advance. Teaching Fellows should plan for an additional 1 hour of work time in between sessions to prepare as well as reach out to students as needed.

What is an Explorations course?

You will design a 4 session “Exploration” course focused on an academically enriching topic within one of the semester themes: STEM, Social Justice, Art and Humanities. Each course will have a small supply budget through which we can mail items to student homes as needed. In late September you will be asked to submit your course title, overview and first lesson (on Nearpod). As you design, ask yourself: What is an engaging and rigorous topic that would push students’ thinking and inspire a love of learning? Can I engage my former students in brainstorming topics? What are the learning goals for my unit? How will I actively engage all students throughout each lesson? How can I make my course feel new and different from their school year remote learning? Are there opportunities for hands on work at home or a project/presentation element? Students will receive a course pack in early October with the Themes and accompanying Exploration topics and will have the opportunity to rank their top selections.

What will my main responsibilities be during the program?

Over the course of the fall you will plan and teach 4 lessons and then support your co-teacher as they teach 4 lessons. You will reach out to remind your students of the program each week, track attendance and make family/student calls as needed. Following each lesson, you will oversee 30 minutes of study hall time during which students can do homework as a group as well as receive 1-1 support in a breakout room.

What resources and support will I have?

During our weekly staff meetings, we will provide ongoing training in remote teaching best practices as well as allow you time to debrief and plan with your co-teacher. Each pair of Teaching Fellows will have access to Nearpod (including lessons in the Nearpod library) and a Zoom account.

Can I apply for multiple days?

Yes! Specify this in your cover letter. You will receive two $400 stipends if you teach with us 2x a week.
