Marketing and Social Media Assistant (Volunteer)

Minimum commitment: 6 months

Do you excel at creating marketing strategy and have a knack for social media

platforms? The nonprofit news organization WhoWhatWhy is looking for a

Marketing and Social Media Assistant to help us reach and engage with wider

audiences with our new pieces of investigative journalism while developing

short- and long-term goals with our marketing team. We need someone creative

and social media savvy to strategize around, manage, and expand our influence

through carefully executed, engaging campaigns. You will be responsible for

helping envision how to place and market content through social media

platforms, our website, and other methods.

This position is part-time and pro bono, but down the road, as we grow, we can

offer possibilities of compensation.


WhoWhatWhy is changing public awareness. We are a credible solution to the

raging debate over whether news is fake or not, with agenda-fr

research and bracingly fresh analysis. Non-corporate, non-partisan and

commercial-free, we are powered entirely by public support and the passionate

involvement of people who believe in our mission. Our social media endeavors to

be an extension of our mission while reaching as many people as possible.

  • Degree in marketing, communications, or a related field (preferred)
  • Experience maintaining social media platforms and knowledge of social

media best practices and analytics tools

  • Can pare down long-form news articles and sum them up into punchy short


  • A strategic, results-oriented mindset geared toward building exciting

social media campaigns and framing our reporting

  • Solid written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of Buffer is a plus
  • Knowledge of multiple social platforms is a plus, especially Instagram,

Facebook & Twitter


  • Manage, optimize, and grow WhoWhatWhy s social media presence on all

relevant platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)

  • Track and report on our social performance
  • Stay up-to-date on and respond to current events in the news and politics
  • Assist the marketing team in understanding stories and help to formulate

the best ways to promote them

  • Utilize a good understanding of WhoWhatWhy s coverage, mission, and

goals to influence how we communicate with potential readers

  • Research and develop online relationships with influencers,

organizations, and individuals that would be interested in knowing about

our work


  • Expand your knowledge of journalism, marketing, and social media
  • Interact with successful, thoughtful, interesting people
  • Make a difference in the world of journalism and beyond
