By convening nonprofit members of the civil rights community and DEI leaders, Open to All develops resources and trainings, as well as ongoing programming, to support businesses large and small to be truly Open to All.

Position Description

Open to All employs a fully remote, U.S.-based staff and seeks a Director of Programs and Communications to advance and expand programs and communications that cultivate support for our nation’s nondiscrimination laws and advance a culture of inclusion and belonging. Reporting to the Managing Director, the Director and acts as a key strategist, facilitator, and communicator regarding proactive program strategy, partnerships, and responses to the current landscape, focused specifically on discrimination, diversity, equity, and inclusion. This work includes developing communications, resources, and programming for both nonprofit and business coalition members.

Working closely with the Managing Director, the Director will strategize, develop, and implement communications for digital, print as well as campaigns/events, including messaging, statements, digital content, print materials, blogs and opinion pieces; directing rapid response outreach to audiences; supporting visibility plans and speaking opportunities; and working with digital, social and traditional media to amplify Open to All’s work and impact.

As the manager of Open to All’s nonprofit coalition and Advisory Council, the Director will be a vocal participant in coalitions and cultivate relationships with key constituents. With a constant eye toward current events, including United States Supreme Court litigation, legislation, and hate crimes, the Director will design and implement inspiring and effective programs and communications plans and dedicated campaigns that strategically support Open to All’s mission. 

The Director will supervise a Communications and Program Associate.

The position is remote and occasionally travels to meet with partners, attend staff retreats, and conferences. 

Key Responsibilities

• Communicate the strategic goals, work, and progress of the Open to All program to internal and external constituents.

• Monitor Open to All coalition members’ organizing, news, conferences, events, and resources.

• Represent Open to All as a member organization of national coalitions.

• Cultivate key constituent relationships, particularly with nonprofit leaders.

• Identify collaborations with nonprofit coalition members around events, forums, and initiatives. 

• Oversee the creation of multi-year communications strategies and annual plans to advance the program’s priorities and provide an overarching vision and strategy for the program.

• Design and direct strategic, complex, and diversified communications strategies and plans.

• Media relations, including drafting press releases, pitching, and following up, and fostering strong relationships with media. Utilize a wide range of communication strategies to successfully influence target audiences and help shape opinions on issues on which OTA works. 

• Oversees the Open to All website and supervises OTA’s digital strategies.

• Monitor news of discrimination, hate incidents/crimes daily, and alert rapid response as needed.

• Coordinate with leaders to prepare for crisis communications as needed; anticipates potential reputational risks and actively manages against them.

• Operate collaboratively, efficiently and effectively across the greater organization and exhibit excellent judgement in managing projects, decisions and people.

• Own responsibility and accountability for meeting strategic goals and objectives.

• Have significant opportunity to act independently within broad program goals.

• Supervise staff and/or contractors.

• Serve as mentor/advisor to staff throughout organization.

• Travel as needed for business meetings, team retreats, or professional development.

Using keen analytical skills and excellent judgment, this individual will successfully address opportunities and challenges, consistently taking initiative to anticipate needs, address complex problems and translate plans into a cohesive program strategy, all while engaging with Open to All's team, nonprofit coalition members, and business partners. This leader will have the willingness to develop new processes that will enact change and optimize impact across Open to All.

An Effective Communicator and Ambassador

An engaged, active listener, able to tailor communications to effectively reach a range of audiences, the Director of Programs and Communications will be a skilled and effective communicator with both internal and external constituents. The Director will lead strategic and inspiring communications initiatives through collaboration with stakeholders to advance Open to All’s mission and impact.

A Collaborative Relationship Builder & Team Manager

With an ability to quickly establish credibility and rapport, this leader will adeptly build and sustain relationships with nonprofit coalition members, staff, business members, corporate partners, and other constituent groups, harnessing their professional networks in support of Open to All. Acting with the highest integrity, the Director will be a key ambassador, navigating coalition dynamics with a high degree of emotional intelligence. A natural consensus-builder, the Director will be a dynamic team member, able to set priorities and mentor staff for the long-term success of individual staff and the team.


• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

• Five to 10 years of nonprofit communications or program management experience with three to five of those in a team management role. 

• Experience developing communication and engagement strategies and evaluating effectiveness of communications.

• Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.

• Demonstrated ability in communications planning and execution.

• Proven track record working with media. 

• Understanding and knowledge of social media. 

• Experience with organizational branding and fundraising and online web presence. 

• Ability to maximize impact of OTA’s resources not only via media exposure, but also through broader distribution and rollout. 

• Launch planning and project management.

• Works collaboratively as part of an internal staff team as well as with the leadership and staff of partner organizations. 

• Demonstrated results in managing within complex systems and proven experience in developing and managing collaborative partnerships. 

• Demonstrated success developing and evaluating programs to align with organizational strategy, and in selecting and successfully operationalizing innovative programs.

• Strong project management skills with experience in complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth. 

• Strength in hiring, recruiting, managing, developing, coaching, and retaining individuals and teams, empowering them to elevate their levels of responsibility and performance. 

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to detail. 

• Excellent writing, presentation, communication, mediation, and negotiation skills.

Compensation & Benefits

This is an exempt, full-time position with a salary range of $115,000 - 125,000 per year. The Movement Advancement Project offers competitive salary plus dental and vision benefits, 403(b) retirement matching, flexible spending program, workers compensation, long-term disability, paid parental leave, and other benefits.
