Overview of Role:
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance helps enable The Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program (FFRP) to deliver on its mission and vision by ensuring sound financial structures, practices and controls are in place across the organization. The Director of Finance is a member of FFRP senior leadership and contributes to the design of the organization’s future vision, short and long-term growth strategy. They also lead financial planning and analysis activities and serve as the technical expert on financial matters.
Specific strategic responsibilities of this role for the next 6-12 months include:
- Ensure comprehensive built out of Sage Intacct system
- Ensure proper financial controls in place on SalesForce
- Audit grant funding, reporting and payables practice to ensure compliance with GAAP and any other rules and regulations.
- Assess Finance Manager role to ensure alignment with organizational needs, communicate and implement changes in alignment with the Executive Director;
- Ensure Finance Manager is trained and clear on their role
- Implement new policies and procedures as needed when gaps are identified
Specific areas of responsibility of the Director of Finance include:
Financial Operations including planning, budgeting and reconciliation:
- Works with Executive Director to develop, install and maintain key financial systems, infrastructure and processes
- Serves as technical lead for FFRP short and long-term financial planning and analysis
- Prepares and manages organization budget, reporting and forecasting; providing reports to Board of Directors, Founders, Executive Director and any others that are deemed necessary to know on a regular and as needed basis
- Manages and tracks organizational cash flow
- Manages and oversees all revenue collections including invoicing of partners and collecting funds from state partners, fee-for-service clients, funders and other stakeholders
- Manages and oversees all payables including vendors, contractors, payroll and tax oversight
- Reconciles budget on a regular basis to ensure real-time understanding of budget to actuals. Leads monthly process of reconciliation to ensure a real-time sense of budget to actuals; reports out as appropriate
- Maintains all required financial documentation to ensure organizational compliance with all laws, rules and regulations
- Works with outside auditing bodies ensuring compliance of FFRP practices
- Ensures FFRP financial practices meet legal requirements and industry standards in all areas
- Works with Director of Operations and Human Resources to set financially sound parameters for selecting and engaging appropriate vendors for FFRP; manages process for vendor engagement or contracting and record keeping
- Works with Director of Operations and Human Resources to select and implement employee and participant compensation and benefits via appropriate vendors
- Works with Director of Operations and Human Resources to assess risk and ensure appropriate insurances are in place and maintained
- Oversees and manages payroll
Revenue Planning:
- Works with Executive Director and Director of Development to design annual fundraising strategy, goals and targets for general operations and fee-for-service business
- Manages grant processing, management and tracking, sets and maintains appropriate protocols and standards
- Serves as technical expert for financial planning and analysis with respect to new FFRP ventures including fee-for-service model(s).
General Leadership and Management:
- Supervises, manages, and develops one Finance Manager
- Along with all FFRP leaders, the Director of Finance demonstrates leadership in establishing and maintaining a work environment that is free from discrimination and creates a sense of inclusion and support for all employees in the workplace.
- Understands the duties and responsibilities may modified at the discretion of the Board or Executive Director to align with changing FFRP needs
Key Qualifications for Role:
- Significant prior experience working in a nonprofit environment including understanding of grant accounting required
- Prior experience working with government funding sources (grants) and accompanying compliance requirements
- Strong technical accounting skills required and knowledge of GAAP especially as it pertains to nonprofit organizations
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Prior supervisory experience preferred
- BS in Accounting or Finance preferred
- CPA or MBA in Finance preferred
Compensation & Benefits
This position is a full-time, non-exempt role at a rate of $115,000-$125,000 annually. We offer significant opportunities for professional development and growth.
