This is an opening for a 1099 policy contractor to conduct research, drafting, advocacy, and outreach in support of Masa Group’s immigration policy efforts and advocacy. This is a retainer-based independent contractor position with the expectation of a commitment of 32 hours a week, with at least half of those hours being during Masa Group’s typical business hours of M-H 10a-6p ET. Masa Group is a boutique consulting firm whose mission is to secure progressive, just, and bold policies at the state, local, and national levels on behalf of social justice organizations. Masa Group is an immigrant and minority-led consulting firm specializing in local, state, and federal immigration advocacy. Masa Group organizes and conducts a variety of services, including legislative visits, lobby days, legislative campaigns, large-scale issue campaigns, drafts of legislative text, resolutions, and congressional oversight letters. In terms of regulatory advocacy, Masa Group’s activities include authoring regulatory comments; and facilitating stakeholder engagements with key civil and political civil service employees.  In terms of research, writing, and communications, Masa Group drafts reports, policy briefs, letters, legal and community advisories, op-eds, press statements, speeches, and blog posts. Finally, Masa Group provides strategic advice on and implements advocacy campaigns, manages stakeholder coalitions, and engages in government relations services.
Masa Group provides policy support for immigration nonprofits engaging in state, federal, and local pro-immigration advocacy. COMPENSATION
This is a retainer-based independent contractor position with the expectation of a commitment of 32 hours a week compensated with a retainer of $3,200/month paid in two installments of $1,600 per month. The contractor is responsible for all relevant state and federal taxes and withholding.Â
BENEFITS
This is a 1099 contractor position. There are no benefits beyond the compensation outlined above.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This is an entry-level to intermediate position. The Policy Contractor will research and author reports, briefs, memoranda, and other public-facing materials. They will conduct outreach to key stakeholders and support Masa Group in its state, local, and federal advocacy and policy efforts, with a particular focus on working with pro-immigration non-profit organizations and coalition work. This associate represents Masa Group and clients on coalition calls and support portfolios related to legislative advocacy, regulatory advocacy, communications-related work, and research and writing. We expect this position to handle a variety of immigration topic areas, including asylum/border, universal representation, naturalization, DACA, and general advocacy in support of undocumented immigrants, but this may change to include additional or fewer issue areas. The contractor is expected to have some experience in some, but not all, of these substantive immigration areas.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- J.D. from ABA accredited law school (bar membership not required) or a Master’s degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, International Relations, or a related field
- A demonstrated interest in or experience working with immigrant and/or refugee populations
- Familiarity with immigration laws, regulations, or policy strongly preferred
- Previous internship, externship, or clerkship with immigration policy preferredÂ
- Excellent research and writing skills
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Masa requires all employees and contractors to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless there is a medical exemption
