POSITION TITLE: Senior Campaigner 

PROGRAM: Environmental Health (Plastics) 

LOCATION: DC, Geneva, or Remote

SUPERVISOR: Program Director, Environmental Health 

SALARY: $61,000-80,000 depending on qualifications


SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: 

Through its Environmental Health (EH) program, the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) works to strengthen regulation of toxic substances and protect communities and families worldwide from toxic risks. CIEL seeks a Senior Campaigner to join the EH team in support of a growing campaign to address the human and environmental impacts of plastic production, use, and disposal worldwide. Specifically, the Senior Campaigner will advance CIEL’s efforts to strengthen the international legal regime governing plastics, including, most importantly, securing an ambitious global agreement to address the plastic crisis. As a critical part of the CIEL team, the Senior Campaigner will participate actively in key international fora, engage directly with relevant decision-makers, and work to equip, strengthen, and align partners worldwide to define, develop, and achieve policy objectives within the United Nations, the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm (BRS) conventions, and beyond. 

The Senior Campaigner will have a deep familiarity with the sources and impacts of plastic pollution, demonstrated experience in environmental and policy advocacy at the international level, extensive and established connections within the global movement to address plastic pollution, and experience creating and mobilizing campaigns at multiple levels in the fight against plastic. Responsibilities include: participating actively in relevant international processes; preparing policy analyses, briefing notes, and other documents; extensively mobilizing and facilitating cross-cutting partnerships and building diverse coalitions; working with movement partners to develop and advance shared campaign objectives, strategies, and tactics; and working with CIEL’s Communications team and others to create communications and campaign materials that help achieve CIEL’s objectives. The position requires highly effective writing and public speaking skills; extensive experience working in collaborative processes with people from diverse backgrounds; and fluency in English. The position demands extensive international travel, often for significant periods. The Senior Campaigner reports to the Program Director for Environmental Health. 


DUTIES:

Campaign Development: In conjunction with the Program Director and other relevant staff, develop, lead, and implement bold campaigns and strategies that achieve measurable progress towards CIEL’s strategic priorities and program objectives: 

  • Lead and support in the design and implementation of strategies to inform, engage, and mobilize non-governmental constituencies in support of the negotiation of a new plastics treaty and other relevant campaign goals
  • Assist in the research and drafting of high quality materials catered to appropriate audiences to advance the negotiations of an effective plastics treaty, including briefing documents, publications, fact sheets, communications materials like press releases, and other informational materials to inform, engage, and equip governments, partners, CIEL funders, and the public 
  • Maintain a working knowledge of relevant political and regulatory frameworks and issue areas
  • Organize, coordinate, and participate in events and meetings to support the project goals
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with relevant partner organizations, agencies, intergovernmental organizations, country representatives, and other actors/stakeholders to achieve CIEL’s project related goals
  • Represent CIEL in coalitions, public meetings, workshops, and other processes

Coordination

  • Coordinate with, facilitate, and/or mobilize members of existing diverse coalitions to collaboratively achieve shared strategic goals and objectives on the global plastics treaty negotiations;
  • Support and strengthen an inclusive, participatory coalition of Civil Society and Rightsholders that leverages existing networks and new partners to advance shared goals and objectives for an effective plastics treaty;
  • Maintain effective working relationships with relevant partner organizations, including frontline/grassroots groups and civil society organizations, as well as government agencies, intergovernmental organizations, and/or other stakeholders.

Organizational representation & support:

  • As appropriate, represent CIEL before policymakers, in media interviews, and at public events to contribute to CIEL’s strategic objectives
  • Assist in information flow within the Environmental Health program and other CIEL programs
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested or assigned by the Program Director

Management & Administration:

  • Project manage the campaigns and coordination work of CIEL on the plastics treaty, in support of a team of lawyers, campaigners, and associates
  • Coordinate closely with other team members, assigning and supervising tasks of junior staff, as needed
  • Maintain timesheets and submit them on time
  • Meet periodically as requested with supervisor and other team members
  • Participate in weekly staff and team meetings and other organizational activities, including an annual staff performance evaluation
  • Meet target dates, prioritize tasks, and ensure high-quality work products

QUALIFICATIONS:


Minimum Qualifications: 

  • At least seven years of experience designing and leading effective advocacy campaigns, with at least 2 of those in developing and delivering successful advocacy and/or policy campaigns at the international level.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the sources and impacts of plastic pollution, experience with relevant international policy fora, and familiarity with the landscape of the global movement against plastic pollution; 
  • Comfort working with a wide range of constituencies, from international government representatives to community organizations and environmental justice groups.
  • Aptitude and willingness to work in rapid response circumstances where urgency is a necessity.
  • Demonstrated ability to distill key messages from technical information and translate them to different audiences.
  • Able to oversee and deliver multiple priorities by target dates and perform a wide variety of tasks over the course of the workday.
  • Able to work both individually and collaboratively, in close coordination across teams and organizations.
  • Comfort admitting what you don’t know and recognizing that seeking and receiving feedback is part of the learning process.
  • Awareness of how your words and actions affect others, openness to and respect for others’ perspectives.
  • Able to travel, sometimes for extended periods (public safety guidelines permitting).
  • Fluency in the English language. 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Graduate degree or other advanced training in a relevant field (e.g., human rights, international environmental policy, international development) strongly preferred; 
  • Experience with a variety of communication technologies and formats, including social media;
  • Professional proficiency in Spanish or French. 

Location note: This position may be eligible to work from the following locations:

  • CIEL has the capacity through OysterHR to hire employees in certain jurisdictions outside of where we are headquartered. Thus, candidates may be eligible to work remotely from the US or another country, depending on the US state or other country and provided your work schedule can align with South/North American and African/European time zones. You must have obtained your own legal authorization to work and live in the country from which you wish to work.
  • In our Washington, DC, USA office, provided you have obtained your own legal work authorization (CIEL cannot sponsor work visas).
  • In our Geneva, Switzerland office provided you have the ability to legally work in Switzerland, (i.e., a citizen of EU/EFTA member states [1]). 

This is a full-time, exempt position.
