About the Responsible Business Initiative for Justice

The Responsible Business Initiative for Justice [1] (RBIJ) is an innovative and growing criminal justice reform organization.

RBIJ supports organizers, advocates, and campaigners in the criminal justice reform space by bringing the voices of businesses, financial sector actors, and trade representatives to the table. Our work is designed to champion fairness, equality, and effectiveness in systems of punishment; to end mass incarceration and the collateral consequences of a criminal record; and to stop extreme sentencing. We do this by combining a network of issue experts and community-based organizations with the social capital, influence, and internal capacity of businesses and their leaders. Our work falls into three broad categories:

  1. System change:  We help businesses use their voice, platforms, and leverage to move critical criminal justice reform initiatives.
  2. Narrative change: We build and entrench the narrative that fair and equal systems of justice are good for business. We do this through media engagement and broad communications campaigns by both business leaders and relevant advocates.
  3. Implementation, restoration, and repair: We work with businesses to ensure systemic change is translated into real-life impact for justice-involved individuals. We believe that businesses are essential stakeholders in the implementation phase of criminal justice reform and that companies’ internal policies and practices must match their advocacy. We work with companies to address their supply chains, investments, and recruitment practices so they can be effective partners in rebuilding and restoring communities that inequitable systems of justice have disproportionately impacted. At the current time, this work consists of our Unlock Potential [2] program and our second chance hiring program.

About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and creative team member to join RBIJ’s growing inclusive hiring practices team to assist in the development of the Human Resources component of our two hiring programs:  Unlock Potential (UP) [3], which is our hiring program for at-risk youth, and Second Chance Hiring (SCH) employment program. The incumbent will support RBIJ’s relationships with businesses and community-based organizations and be knowledgeable about the policies and practices of inclusive hiring programs. The incumbent reports to the Chief External Affairs Officer.

  • Work closely with team members to understand business-partner employment needs and assist in the creation of a generic employer guide that can be used with businesses as they request assistance with implementing inclusive hiring practices
  • Research labor market information, job availability, and skills requirements in targeted markets to assist in creating workforce development strategies to meet the needs of businesses and program participants
  • Work closely with other team members to ensure that business partners are providing appropriate career opportunities for prospective participants (full-time and/or part-time employment opportunities, apprenticeships, internships, job shadowing, upskilling opportunities) and are trained and ready to receive the participants
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community-based organizations and training providers to ensure that data is tracked, trainings are completed, and appropriate wrap-around care services are provided
  • Assist in maintaining RBIJ’s database of community-based organizations and employers for potential partnerships in inclusive hiring programs

Serve as a liaison with partner organizations that offer second chance hiring resources for employers

  • The incumbent will also serve as a resource to RBIJ leadership in considering its internal human resources processes, including revamping its performance review process.
