Director, External Affairs for a 50+ employee (and growing) remote education non-profit providing professional learning to K-12 educators nationally.

Type of Vacancy: Salaried, full-time

Start date: April 2023 

Location: Remote/home office anywhere in the United States

Report to: Managing Director, Strategic Growth

Supervises: Dependent on the project, the Director, External Affairs is often a Project Leader with project team supervision and leadership development responsibilities

Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $82,650 - $153,500. The typical initial starting salary range begins at 85% of the pay range’s midpoint of $118,100 (i.e., $100,385), commensurate with experience, to ensure there is room for growth over time.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Director, External Affairs leads and increases fundraising from corporations, individuals and foundations and is tasked with developing and implementing an institutional funding structure and strategy in support of efficient operations and significant philanthropic and school system revenue growth. The Director, External Affairs helps set Teaching Lab fundraising goals, creates the systems and processes for meeting the goals, delegates work to team members, and leads the implementation of these systems and processes to meet the fundraising goals.



STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES KEY SUCCESS INDICATORS (KSI)

  • The Director, External Affairs is accountable for achieving goals set in collaboration with their manager, aligned with FY23 goals, and especially:
  • Increase reach through winning RFPs and generating philanthropy:

  • >10,000 educators reached, serving over 700,000 students
  • Generate Revenue:

    Teaching Lab generates revenue and philanthropy to pursue sustainable growth and their mission and goals.
  • Earned revenue: $6M
  • Philanthropy for internal operations: $6.5M [2]
  • Philanthropy for programmatic delivery: $2M
  • Total Revenue: $14.5M [3]
  • Total Programmatic Delivery Revenue: $8M
  • Note: Directors, External Affairs are responsible for being the Lead on closing campaign or philanthropy deals that generate at least $1M per year
  • Operate efficiently and equitably:

    Develop and refine internal operational structures and systems to allow all team members and contractors to do their best work every day
  • 100% of leads and clients are tracked in the CRM, following business rules
  • 100% of philanthropic pipeline data is updated, usable and accurate by the end of each month
  • As applicable, within the role, model the radical

    commitments for our values

    (i.e., collaboration, responsive service, research, excellence, learning with humility, and equity).



ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 5+ years of experience in development or related field
  • 2+ years of experience leading development functions, setting goals, creating the systems and processes for meeting the goals for educational programming
  • Experience leading relationships with diverse stakeholders and funders
  • Proven experience developing non-profit fundraising strategy
  • Experience managing a process to apply for state or district-level RFPs



DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS (If Applicable)

  • Advanced degree
  • Experience in building and developing essential components of a development function
  • Working experience in K-12 education
