Protect Democracy seeks an experienced Writer/Editor to join our communications team. This new role will require working with diverse stakeholders across the organization, including senior leadership, to support our impact and organizational work and ensure that we communicate with a consistent tone and voice. 

The Writer/Editor will be responsible for drafting and editing content for a wide variety of publications and platforms, including long-form articles and essays, reports and white papers, op-eds and blog posts, speeches, and presentations. You will also be responsible for establishing an organizational style guide and helping to ensure brand consistency across our written products. Significant editing and ghostwriting is required, and you may also have the opportunity to publish content under your own name. 

The ideal candidate is an experienced writer and editor who can craft and adapt language to meet our impact goals, match tone and voice as needed, and translate complex or technical law and policy language and ideas for diverse audiences. This position requires a keen attention to detail, strong sense of initiative, and the ability to meet deadlines — and drive others to meet deadlines. A commitment to our mission and a passion for defending and strengthening our democracy are essential.

The Writer/Editor will:

  • Independently author, co-author, ghostwrite, and/or edit long-form articles and essays, reports, white papers, op-eds, analysis pieces, speeches, and presentations, synthesizing existing materials as needed
  • Collaborate across diverse perspectives and project teams to develop ideas for written content in support of our impact work and to advance our mission.
  • Develop creative and innovative ideas for new arguments and topics for written materials that will advance our mission.
  • Create executive summaries, fact sheets, one-pagers, blog posts, and other materials that are derivatives of longer pieces.
  • Develop (or select) and maintain an organizational style guide.
  • Provide editorial review of significant public-facing materials, reviewing for content, persuasiveness, clarity, organizational style and tone, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Coach and train Protect Democracy staff to expand our in-house writing and editing capacity for mission impact.

Requirements for applying:

  • Nuanced and sophisticated understanding of Protect Democracy’s mission, and the ability to write accurately about authoritarianism and related subject matter with limited guidance.
  • Bachelor's or higher degree, preferably in English, journalism, political science, or a similar field.
  • A minimum of 8 years of writing, ghost writing, speech writing and/or editing experience.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills; proven ability to translate complex concepts into easily digestible terms.
  • Ability to write a variety of types of content from op-eds to long-form articles to reports and testimony.
  • Experience writing about the mechanics of government and the intricacies of policy making and politics, particularly with regard to small-d democratic issues.
  • Experience as an editor and ability to engage in a collaborative editing process.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, including the confidence to collaborate and exchange feedback with staff at all levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with quick turnaround times while adhering to our work-life balance standards.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with a large, cross-disciplinary team.
