The Role

Reporting to the company’s CEO/CFO, the Vice President of Finance, Controller is a VP-level manager who leads the company’s accounting and financial reporting functions and sits on the six-member Management Team. This is a challenging role that will provide great development for an experienced Controller ready to take on Vice President responsibilities.

 

Responsibilities

Supervise the company’s accounting and financial reporting functions

  • Directly supervise and develop staff who perform most revenue, expense, A/P and A/R functions
  • Monitor the quality, timeliness and accuracy of financial processes performed in operational departments and by third-party service providers
  • Manage the general ledger and production of monthly GAAP financial statements

Maintain and improve the company’s accounting and control systems

  • The company uses Acumen Book accounting software, including general ledger and several specialized subsystems
  • In addition to the accounting system, there are several other supporting systems

Control, report and forecast the company’s cash position and financial flows through multiple payment systems and banks

Collaborate with Senior HR Manager to process payroll and associated entries to accounting system and oversee payroll tax compliance by outside payroll service provider

Provide financial support to budgetary managers of other departments within the company

Provide analysis and advice to the company’s management team with respect to accounting, cash, and other financial impacts of contemplated transactions and policies

Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and report on variances from those budgets

Lead the company’s participation in its annual independent financial statement audit

Champion efficiency and effective internal controls, both within the accounting team and broadly across the company

Support the company’s external tax accountants with information and timely execution of payments

Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state (California, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, North Carolina and other, as needed) and local tax requirements, including sales taxes, information returns, and business permits

Requirements

Essential Skills and Experience

5-7+ years accounting experience, including one or more of these types of experience:

  • Public accounting experience, including running audits at the senior accountant level, or
  • Controller or Accounting Manager experience in a reasonably complex business, or
  • A broad range of accounting experiences including substantial involvement in most typical accounting cycles, such as billing, collections, purchasing, accounts payable, inventory, general ledger, account reconciliations, and preparation of basic financial statements

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a substantially equivalent course of study

Other

We will consider permanent remote employment limited to California, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington. The position is preferred to work 9:00 am to 5:30 pm Pacific time, but hours can be discussed during the interview process.
