Overview of the Position


Elevate’s roster of State and Federal Contract Grant Writers is made up of experienced proposal writers who subcontract with Elevate intermittently to complete individual grant writing projects per Elevate’s contracts with nonprofit clients. State and Federal Contract Grant Writers must be experienced fundraising and consulting experts who have proven track record of project management for, writing, and winning public grants from either federal or state agencies. Elevate State and Federal Contract Grant Writers are paid on a project basis as a 1099 contractor.

 

A State and Federal Contract Grant Writer must possess excellent project management, consulting, writing, and computer skills. The consultant must be highly organized and have the ability to independently develop and implement a successful work plan as well as follow Elevate processes to meet deadlines. Candidates must have previous experience writing Federal and State grants, as well as navigating common application portals like grants.gov.  

A State and Federal Contract Grant Writer must be able to synthesize complex and diverse information quickly and efficiently to support a complete and thoughtful application. They must be comfortable identifying weaknesses or potential pitfalls in application materials. This includes comprehensively reviewing RFPs and proposal guidelines as well as learning about a client’s programming and other relevant information. It is expected that State and Federal Contract Grant Writers will lead clients to strengthen their program design and proposal language in order to produce a high quality and competitive application. 

 

Elevate’s State and Federal Contract Grant Writers must also embody Elevate’s values, including being able to exhibit objectivity and openness to others’ views and diversity, and contributing to building a positive team spirit by putting the success of clients above their own interests, within reason. 

This is a remote position. Depending on the work plan and timeline set by the writer, work may be required in the evenings and weekends.

 

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include preparation of proposals and grant applications, administrative tasks such as work planning, creating and organizing supplemental proposal materials, and consulting with a range of clients. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing grant proposal guidelines or requests for proposals to identify requirements and set clients up for smooth proposal submissions
  • Developing a work plan to encompasses all proposal requirements and schedule steps of the drafting and submission process
  • Scheduling and facilitating meetings or interviews with client staff to gather required information to develop compelling proposals
  • Generating proposals and supporting documents in response to Federal and State grant solicitations
  • Preparing application drafts for internal Elevate review and incorporating feedback
  • Identifying strategic or operational challenges that may pose problems for developing a strong application and addressing those challenges in a professional and timely manner
  • Managing difficult or time sensitive client situations and responding promptly to customer needs to improve service.

Compensation

State and Federal Writers are 1099 contractors. Compensation is determined at the beginning of each project, based on size and complexity of the project deliverable. The average compensation for a project is between $4,000 and $8,000. Writers will be compensated at the conclusion of each project, pending successful project completion.
