Overall Function

The Communications Manager, Petrochemicals will manage the collective communications and media efforts in support of EDF’s partnership with the Beyond Petrochemicals: People over Pollution initiative. Working closely with the Director, DEI & Justice Communications, this position will collaborate on the development of strategy and implementation of a robust communications plan in support of the initiative’s goal to improve the health and well-being of communities most harmed by the petrochemical industry.

Additionally, by utilizing EDF scientific insights and data, they will play a key role in the day-to-day execution of communications goals and objectives aligned with the initiative’s campaign, establishing the initiative’s voice, and developing messaging that supports the goals of communities. The Communications Manager will report to the Director, DEI & Justice Communications, is a part of the MarComm team, and will work closely with both the Community Engagement and Climate and Health teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and manage traditional and social communications strategies, working closely with program staff and under the direction of the Director, DEI & Justice Communications.
  • Craft the initiative’s media assets and website and social media content, including managing the editorial calendar, developing original content, and working with program experts to draft and promote a broad range of research and media materials under deadline pressure. 
  • Identify opportunities to amplify community voices and support narratives with relevant EDF scientific data and insights and coordinate production of related communications deliverables.
  • Develop, maintain, and track ongoing, positive relationships with key journalists, bloggers, editorial writers, columnists, and other opinion leaders.
  • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF’s values.
  • Manage a portfolio of diverse community groups and partner organizations by cultivating, informing, and engaging local and national partners through a variety of channels.
  • Increase engagement of local communities and strategic audiences in advocacy efforts supporting public health goals.
  • Generate earned media exposure in key media outlets in alignment with established strategies and communications plans.
  • Track and analyze communications campaign metrics and prepare summaries on a regular basis to measure successes, inform future strategies, and provide updates to funders.
  • Manage consultants/vendors and mentor communications staff and interns as needed.
  • Respond to breaking news and events using social media, press releases, and other means.
  • Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of relevant work experience in communications or a related field and a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public policy, public health, or relevant field required.
  • Experience with WordPress or similar content management system is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects at once and working across several departments or programs.
  • Strong internet research, organizational, analytical, and social media skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to present complex and nuanced information in a clear and comprehensive way to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proactive, detail oriented, and a strategic thinker with the ability to work well independently, as a part of a team, and with colleagues across multiple time zones.
  • Understanding of the public health, policy, and environmental justice issues surrounding petrochemicals.
  • Excellent judgment and interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality while representing the organization and interfacing with all levels of staff, volunteers, funders, and vendors.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent change and prioritize multiple tasks effectively under deadline pressure.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 30% of the time.

Hiring Range

We offer a strong total rewards package encompassing competitive salary, robust benefits, and professional development opportunities consistent with a modern global organization.

The pay range for this role is 83,000 - 91,000 USD which takes into account factors such as candidate experience, skills, training, internal team equity and local norms.
