Random House Studio, an imprint of the Random House Children’s Books division, seeks a proactive and detail-oriented Editorial Assistant who will be an essential member of the editorial team, supporting the Publisher and Editorial Director with daily administrative and editorial responsibilities. Our assistant will provide administrative support and act as a liaison between authors, agents, and different departments within the company.

This position offers a unique perspective on the strategy and operations of Random House Children’s Books, home to beloved, classic children’s book authors and brands like Dr. Seuss, and Magic Tree House, as well as the more recent bestselling The Wonderful Things You Will Be, Duck & Goose and Grumpy Monkey and award-winning titles like Hotdog, Standing in the Need or Prayer, The Notebook Keeper: A Story of Kindness from the Border and Sweet Justice: Georgia Gilmore and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Creating books for toddlers through young adult readers, in all formats from board books to activity books to picture books, novels, and nonfiction, the imprints of Random House Children’s Books bring together award-winning authors and illustrators, world-famous franchise characters, and multimillion-copy series.

As the Editorial Assistant, you will be part of a fun and fast-paced group. You'll meet and work closely with many colleagues in other departments within the division, especially our Publishing Office, Art, Marketing, and Publicity. The role is ideal for someone who loves picture books. The editorial assistant will also be a details-focused self-starter, a strong communicator, an organizer, and a multitasker.

The Role:

  • Traffics books through all stages of production, including formatting text, clarity of directions to printer/designer, and sequence of materials
  • Performs administrative and clerical tasks such as requesting contracts, preparing P and Ls, ordering books, communicating with authors and illustrators, and expense reports
  • Drafts cover/flap and online copy, front matter, and Title Information sheets
  • Attends editorial meetings and offers creative input
  • Reads and evaluates manuscripts and writes reader reports
  • Inter-faces with Library of Congress in the obtaining of CIP data and LC numbers
  • Submits copyright notices
  • Research for special projects, including photo research, market research, pop culture research, etc.

The Essentials:

  • A self-starter fluent in multitasking with impeccable attention to details
  • A deadline-oriented administrator who is solution-focused and comfortable handling many projects at once
  • Adaptable to all communication styles on both email and phone while keeping an inviting can-do attitude when collaborating with authors, illustrators and in-house staff
  • A foundation and passion for both creative and professional writing
  • It is essential that the candidate is comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment and possesses a proactive and independent approach to problem-solving
  • The ideal candidate is savvy and proficient in MS Office, particularly MS Outlook and Excel, as well as PowerPoint
  • Experience in editorial acquisitions or children’s publishing is a plus, but not required to succeed in this role—we value a team player with a passion for contemporary picture books who is also a strong writer and has a deep respect for authors and illustrators and their creative process

The salary for this position is $45,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
