SECTION II: Position Description Summary

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is seeking a Staff Accountant. NAEYC is a professional membership organization that works to promote high-quality early learning for all young children, birth through age 8, by connecting early childhood practice, policy, and research. NAEYC advances a diverse, dynamic early childhood profession and supports all who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children.

The Staff Accountant is responsible for processing daily incoming payments/receipts in a timely and accurate manner; reconciling select general ledger accounts monthly; performing monthly financial analysis of the Statement of Financial Position and the Statement of Activities in accordance with the NAEYC accounting and finance policies; preparing monthly journal entries into the general ledger system; and performing a daily reconciliation of cash activity that ties the receipts to the bank statements.

Reviews all transactions for appropriate documentation and approval prior to processing, payment, and/or receipt and ensuring the following:

· Transactions are recorded to the proper period.

· Transactions are coded to the correct general ledger accounts.

· Transactions are recorded timely and at an accurate amount.

· Transactions were appropriately authorized.

Review, process, and close the cash receipts and/or disbursements daily in NAEYC's account management system and/or accounting system to ensure an informal close is performed daily.

Reconcile assigned general ledger accounts monthly by the assigned deadline, and ensuring the monthly schedules are always audit-ready by ensuring the following:

· Reconciliation is complete and accurate.

· Any reconciling variances were investigated and resolved no later than the following month's closing.

· Monthly schedules are tied to the general ledger accounts.

· When applicable, schedules provides the necessary information for the audited financial statement footnotes.

Analyze the accounting records, including financial statements and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness and conformity with standards defined within the department.

Ensure accounting processes are documented and maintained, including the leveraging of current technologies to ensure processes are efficient and flexible.

Engage in critical and confidential aspects of accounting that might have significant internal effort or minor external effect.

Manages and completes all projects as assigned and maintains immaculate records to support the work.

SECTION IV: Management:

The Staff Accountant has no direct supervisory responsibilities and works under the direct supervision of the Finance and Accounting Manager, following the guidance, guidelines, and policies of the Finance Department and of the Association. Within the overall priorities and schedules established by the Senior Director of Finance and Accounting, the incumbent prioritizes tasks to meet expectations.

Position Designation(s): Business Operations and Business Continuity: The role is critical to financial operations and may be called upon to be present in the event of an emergency or crisis, financial or otherwise. This role needs to maintain a regular physical presence in NAEYC's office and therefore is eligible for telework and not eligible to be fully remote. Telework eligibility is subject to NAEYC's Telework and Remote Work Policy.

SECTION V: Desired Qualifications

  • Must have a BS in Accounting or Business with 2-4 years of accounting experience.
  • Experience working in a non-profit environment is a plus.
  • Must have experience with computerized accounting and database systems, knowledge of Sage Intacct and NetForum is a plus.
