Science Writer/Technical Writer (ES210) NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), nestled in the Maryland suburbs of Greenbelt is located just 30 minutes from the heartbeat of America - Washington, D.C. NASA, the pinnacle of human achievement wants you to join the team. T The Science Writer/Technical Writer works with the Heliophysics Division (HPD). Goddard is located in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., though there is the potential flexibility for remote work/telecommuting at the discretion of the NASA customer. ADNET Systems is seeking candidates to serve as the Science Writer/Technical Writer for NASA's Heliophysics Communication and Outreach Team on the Space and Earth Science Data Analysis (SESDA) contract. The communications and outreach team identifies, reports, and develops written and multimedia stories and releases about NASA's research results in heliophysics and solar science. The group also supports major media, field, and public awareness campaigns. The team collaborates closely with NASA's Office of Communications and the leadership of NASA's Heliophysics Division. This Science Writer/Technical Writer position reports to the Prime Contractor Earth Science Group Manager and the Task Lead for the SESDA Contract. SESDA supports a broad range of science disciplines; the development and use of scientific computer systems; engineering data analysis; engineering efforts to develop new technologies for scientific instrumentation; software application development and implementation; and computer system management for science exploration research. Creating content for a science institution requires initiative, persistence, and diplomacy. As a translator between scientists and engineers and the public, you need patience, an ability to accept constructive criticism, and a healthy self-confidence in your craft. The public has high expectations for the depth and quality of NASA's communications, and this demands acute attention to detail and accuracy. Duties will include but are not limited to the following. Responsibilities:
  • Ability to write technical and non-technical content.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite products (particularly MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint
  • Create annual, monthly, and weekly reports on behalf of the communications and outreach team to a variety of audiences (internal and external) including Heliophysics leadership, scientists, Office of Communications, Heliophysics mission partners and other external stakeholders.
  • Tracking and managing large Heliophysics communications and outreach efforts and campaigns
  • Liaise with Heliophysics communications team and ensure that all content is aligned with Heliophysics and agency communications strategies.
  • Collaborate with Heliophysics communications team on developing standard operating procedures and ensuring that team members adhere to them.
  • Create briefing materials (presentations, reports, and spreadsheets) for Heliophysics scientists and leadership
  • Assist with development of public facing content including blog posts, social media content and web features.
  • Build and maintain a network of subject matter experts within and outside of NASA.
  • Develop processes and procedures for Heliophysics mission partners and provide administrative support as needed
Required qualifications:
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in technical and or science writing
  • Experience with content and copy editing
  • Experience with fact-checking and proofreading
  • Ability to work well within a distributed team
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Experience with AP Style writing and editing
Desired:
  • Experience (2-5 years) with managing editorial traffic - organizing and juggling multiple projects and adapting to breaking news
  • Proven ability to work under weekly and/or daily deadlines
  • BS/BA degree in English, Communication, Journalism, Science, Technical Writing or a related field
