About Women Win & GRLS

Founded in 2007, Women Win (WW) is a global multi-dimensional women’s fund and we achieve our vision through two main areas of work: girls’ rights through sport and play, and women’s economic resilience.

In particular, through GRLS [1], Women Win advances the playing field that empowers adolescent girls and young women to exercise their rights through sport and play. Together with our global implementing partners, we have impacted the lives of over 4.5 million adolescent girls and young women in over 100 countries. We work globally to ‘advance the playing field’ that empowers girls through sport and play - we develop tools and approaches, design programmes, promote sport as a strategy to empower girls and women and influence other actors across sectors to take up this strategy.

About Breaking Barriers & the research project

Together with adidas and its expert partners, Women Win has developed the adidas Breaking Barriers project [2], an intensive gender equity and inclusivity program. It supports selected non-profit sport organizations in capacity building and provides leadership training to local role models and coaches – our Breaking Barriers Champions – so that they can positively influence the lives of 50,000 women and girls in their local communities. Across 5 years’ time, the project aims to work with 100 inspiring champions and 15 dedicated non-profit organizations committed to making a change.

In 2021, the Breaking Barriers Project commissioned research [3] into the barriers to participating in sport that girls face in Europe, and identified actionable steps practitioners can take to address such barriers making sport a more accessible place. The Project is committed to continuing to identify and address knowledge and research gaps, and to nourish other areas of the project with the learnings uncovered in this process.

This second research project investigates one of the key barriers identified in the first white paper: the role of coaches and girl-oriented coaching. Given the persisting gender gap and disproportionate drop-out rates in girls’ sport participation, there is a need for coaching strategies and practices that address the unique barriers girls encounter to sport participation.

This research project aims to learn from girls and boys what they think and feel about coaches and to hear from experts in the sports industry and sports programs about coaching and program-level practices that help to reduce the barriers to girls’ participation in sport. To accomplish this objective, the report will aim to:

  1. Build upon the findings from the first white paper by investigating the root causes of this barrier and key themes in the European context.
  2. Understand to girls’ personal experiences in sport and coaching and the positive elements that have impacted their participation, motivation and retention.
  3. Examine the ways in which coaches and sports organizations can successfully meet girls’ needs and foster continued participation in sport
