Position Description

Harvard Health Publishing (HHP) is the consumer health education division of Harvard Medical School (HMS) and part of the HMS Office for External Education (OEE). Through its publications, courses, special projects, and flagship website (www.health.harvard.edu), HHP creates and distributes trusted and accessible health information to a wide, global audience.

The Health Content Writer will help HHP accelerate and expand its digital reach by applying their expertise in health writing and web content development to create engaging health content that will drive website traffic. While initially focused on written web content, the role may grow to include podcasts, short videos, and other multimedia and interactive features. Strong research, writing, and editing skills are a must. This individual will interview HMS faculty, evaluate published medical literature, and translate complex health information into cogent, evidence-based, and actionable content for a consumer audience.

The Health Content Writer will also contribute to a range of other editorial efforts. These include working with HMS faculty on blog posts, reviewing special health reports, and creating and editing content for donor-funded projects on topics ranging from Lyme disease to autism, to child and adolescent mental health. This individual may also provide editorial support for social media campaigns.

The ideal candidate works independently, seeking guidance and support when needed; displays strong initiative; demonstrates solid professional judgment; recognizes opportunities; thinks creatively; juggles multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines; meets short deadlines and quick turnaround times; and is a team player.

Job responsibilities:
  • Apply solid research and content creation skills to develop engaging, evidence-based web content in multiple formats and on a variety of health-related topics.
  • Leverage HHP’s existing library of print-first content to create new, SEO-optimized web content.
  • Edit web content written by other writers.
  • Conceive, pitch, and create compelling new web content based on SEO research.
  • Provide editorial support for donor-funded projects on topics including Lyme disease, autism, and child and adolescent mental health.
  • Formulate blog topic ideas and work with HMS faculty to write and edit blog posts.
  • Create, update, and maintain content for the Coronavirus Resource Center.
  • Review special health reports and e-learning courses to ensure they are medically accurate; reflect current best practices, research, and medical advances; and are accessible, informative, and actionable.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Master’s degree in relevant field a plus.
  • 5+ years of professional experience creating web content, with a proven track record creating SEO-based web content preferred.
  • Demonstrated work experience creating evidence-based health/medical content for a lay audience.
  • Proficient in reading medical literature.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Experience creating audio or video content preferred.
  • Interest or experience with social media, data visualization.

This position is based in Boston, but the work may be done fully or primarily remote. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA).
