Project Manager 🔥

Phīla Engaged Giving seeks a 10 hour/week contract Project Manager for The Share Fund, a client-owned grantmaking program that has adopted a community-based, participatory grantmaking model. This role is a one-year contract position with the option to renew. Applicants must live in WA State.

About The Share Fund

The Share Fund [1] is a grantmaking body focused on supporting racial and gender justice in Washington State.  The Fund is financially supported by a Seattle-based couple who is committed to sharing both wealth and power with BIPOC communities across the state. As such, the Fund operates under a Participatory Grantmaking (PGM) model in which a BIPOC Funding Committee is solely responsible for all grantmaking decisions without any input from the donors.

The Share Fund launched in January of 2021 and has since completed two grant cycles, distributing $1.1 million to individuals, companies, community groups and nonprofit organizations operating in Washington State. The Funding Committee meets several times a year and in 2023 will distribute $700,000 in grants.

About Phīla Engaged Giving

Our goal is to help our clients understand the issues that move them, learn from experts on the ground who are doing the work, and to become a meaningful partner to organizations and movements that are affecting change. Our offices are in Seattle and Chicago, and we serve clients around the country and the U.K.

Responsibilities of The Share Fund Project Manager

This is a new contract position that requires approximately 40 hours per month. The role was previously carried out by the Phīla team who will now function in a supervisory capacity for this position and retain overall advisory role for both the committee and the donors. The Project Manager will need to attend several in-person events throughout the year as well as monthly Zoom calls with the Funding Committee. Beyond those scheduled events, the hours are generally flexible and will consist of the following work areas:

  Project Management/Group Management (60%)

  • Be a supportive and engaged team member to the Funding Committee as well as offering ongoing support onboarding/offboarding Committee members over time.
  • Building off of the first two grant cycles, work with the Committee to approve the grantmaking calendar, plan group meetings, and community building parties for the year.
  • Act as the first point of contact for Committee members as well as Share Fund grantees, and be the liaison between grantees and the Funding Committee.
  • Manage and report on The Share Fund’s annual administrative support budget
  • Ensure The Share Fund website and other outreach materials are updated and accessible to anyone who might want to learn about the Fund’s work.
  • Meet regularly with the Phīla team and donors for planning and updates on the work of the Committee and grant recipients.
  • Follow the work of the participatory grantmaking (PGM) community as well as the work of local nonprofits, sharing relevant learning and news with Funding Committee members.

Grants Management (20%)

  • Manage all communications to grantees to ensure deadlines are met and protocols followed.
  • Work to continually improve the grantee experience, raising suggestions and ideas to the Funding Committee and acting on those ideas.

Community Building (10%)

  • Plan all aspects of up to three in-person grantee gatherings per year. These events will happen within King County and statewide.
  • Assist Funding Committee in building community among Share Fund grantees by collecting stories, finding opportunities for collaboration and supporting Funding Committee members in their efforts to advance the work of grantees. This might involve writing a quarterly newsletter for grantees and other interested parties, identifying professionals in the sector to assist specific grantees and/or managing a social media presence for the Fund.
  • Along with the Phīla team, contribute to the growing field of participatory grantmaking (PGM) by finding ways to showcase and share the work of The Share Fund with relevant funding audiences, and building the case for PGM as an actionable means of democratizing the work of grantmaking in family philanthropy.

Group Facilitation (10%)

  • Work closely with The Share Fund’s facilitator to prepare for and lead monthly Zoom meetings, pulling out important decisions the Committee needs to discuss, and collecting relevant information they’ll need in their decision-making.
