Purpose and Background: 

The SBTi is looking for a Project Officer to join the Financial Institutions Net-Zero team. The Project Officer will provide crucial support in developing the forthcoming Net-Zero Standard for Financial Institutions and integrating the standard into the SBT initiative as well as the wider climate action ecosystem after its launch. The post holder will assist in the development of the Financial Institutions Net-Zero Standard supporting the team with critical tasks including managing net-zero inquiries, supporting engagement with the project’s Expert Advisory Group, general project management, as well as crafting presentations and briefings.

The SBTi is seeking a dedicated, mission-driven Project Officer to join the highly motivated, effective, and ambitious Financial Institutions Net-Zero team. The Project Officer for the Financial Institutions Net-Zero team is an exciting new role within the SBTi. The position is a fantastic opportunity for an individual looking to develop a career in environmental stewardship and to contribute significantly to the vital work of the SBTi in driving action on climate change in the finance sector. This role would be ideal for someone with experience in the finance sector and climate change that is interested in becoming part of the team developing the SBTi’s Financial Institutions Net-Zero Standard for delivery in 2023. 

About the team: 

The role sits within the Technical Department that leads the development and maintenance of the key resources within the initiative to enable the adoption of climate targets in line with the best-available science and following best-practice for standard-setting organizations. The normative and non-normative resources developed by the Technical Department are the backbone of the SBTi target-setting framework and include, amongst others, the development of standards, criteria, recommendations, sector-specific guidance, topic-specific guidance and tools, as well as the scientific foundations that underpin all of these, including the curation of scenarios, target-setting methods, though leadership and novel research. 

The Standards Team is a key pillar of the Technical Department responsible for the development and maintenance of cross-sector standards. The Standards Team act as “product owners” for the key cross-sector standards of the initiative, including coordination across different teams to ensure the successful integration and implementation of SBTi standards. Although this role sits within the Standards team, you will also work directly with the SBTi Financial Institutions Team. You will join a team of highly motivated individuals from WRI, WWF, and CDP, working on science-based target setting for greenhouse gas emissions for Financial Institutions around the world. 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Support to develop and eventually update resources related to the FI Net-Zero Standard 
  • Produce high-quality documentation based on internal product and scoping requirements on the Net-Zero Standard for Financial Institutions 
  • Support management of the Expert Advisory Group established to assist SBTi in its development of the Net-Zero Standard for Financial Institutions
  • Support in managing responses to the Net-Zero inquiries
  • Work in conjunction with SBTi partners to assist the Net-Zero target-setting method development process
  • Use and maintenance of SBTi project management and collaboration tools (e.g. Asana, Slack, Google Drive, MS Teams, etc.) 

Essential skills and experience needed:

  • Background in sustainability, climate science, ESG and/or sustainable development 
  • Strong analytical research skills
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly, both orally and in writing, with fluency in English 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a virtual environment
  • Highly organized, fast learner and strong attention to detail 
  • Results oriented, ability to handle multiple tasks and work in a constantly evolving environment
  • Entrepreneurial, self-motivated, and able to work independently in an international and multicultural remote work environment 

Desirable criteria:

  • High proficiency in MS Teams, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to digest and communicate technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Understanding of climate action in the financial sectors
  • Experience in science-based targets, greenhouse gas accounting, preferably in line with the GHG Protocol, net-zero and climate strategy
  • Some knowledge of product offerings among Financial Institutions and an understanding of how these organisations operate
