Description of Work Unit Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Division of University Marketing and Communications (MarComm) oversees Marketing and Brand Management, Strategic Communications, and Community Affairs and Engagement. MarComm provides central marketing, media and community relations, design, photography, and digital social media to build a strong, compelling and effective brand position for the entire university and its units.
Position Summary Working closely with University Web Management, the Senior UX/UI Front End Web Developer is responsible for the design and development, and system architecture of all MarComm web site assignments. This role should be proficient with professional web technologies, to ensure the alignment of web design and user experience requirements. The role will optimize web pages for maximum efficiency and maintain brand consistency across all web pages. You’ll work in in coordination with back-end developers and graphic designers to ensure all elements of web creation are consistent. Excellent communications skills are very important to succeed in this role.
Required Job Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related creative field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of Front-End developer experience
  • Demonstrated experience in web design and design integration utilizing a workflow encapsulating project management, concept, development, production, completion.
  • Demonstrated experience and technical knowledge to develop and implement a wide array of multimedia formats and applications
  • Experience in a windows-based (IIS) web development environment

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript, including DOM manipulation and the JavaScript object model
  • An understanding of React.js and its core principles having experience with popular React.js workflows (such as Flux or Redux)
  • Experience in a LAMP web development environment, including demonstrated experience in HTML, CSS, Javascript, and PHP, and associated technologies
  • Thoroughly familiar with UI/UX development
  • Experience with common front-end design tools, such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD
  • Experience with common front-end development tools such as Babel, Webpack, NPM, etc.
  • Knowledge of the modern authorization mechanisms
  • Familiarity with modern front-end build pipelines and tools
  • A knack for benchmarking and optimization
  • Familiarity with code versioning tools (such as Git, SVN, and Mercurial)
  • GraphQL experience will be a bonus
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Demonstrable experience building accessible websites that meet the most current version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) published by the W3C.
  • Knowledge/Experience with:
    • User Interfaces and interactive deliverables that perform well both on mainstream devices and with assistive technology
    • Semantic and ARIA mark-up elements
    • Product accessibility testing continuously through all development stages
    • Troubleshooting, revising, and updating websites encumbered by legacy code accessibility constraints

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Website Design, Development and System Architecture
Duty/Responsibility Design, development, and system architecture of MarComm web sites. This is done through requirements gathering from key stakeholders, analysis of project requirements and goals, creation of a project plan, communication with stakeholders throughout the projects, graphic design and prototyping, revisions of designs based of feedback from stakeholders, system architecture design (hardware, software and networking resources and integration setup), creation of code to create the end result, testing of the solution to ensure it complies with requirements, deployment of the solution into production. This is done to provide mission critical web services to MarComm and to facilitate web interactions with constituents of the University community. Essential functions:
  • Collaborate with your team to develop elegant front-end solutions
  • Support users with coding requirements
  • Build reusable components and front-end libraries for future use
  • Translate designs and wireframes into high quality code
  • Optimize components for maximum performance across a vast array of web-capable devices and browsers
  • Optimize application for maximum speed and scalability
  • Assure that all user input is validated before submitting to the backend team

Job Duty Category Development and Integration of CMS
Duty/Responsibility Provides the primary development and integration of the CMS (Content Management System), including systems updates, security hardening, user authentication, etc. This is done through evaluation of third party CMS systems, evaluation of requirements and resources to select appropriate solutions, evaluation of third party software add-ons to select appropriate additions, creating add-ons to add functionality to the CMS system, evaluate security of systems and implement best practices, integrate user authentication into systems, update software components as needed, evaluate systems performance(s) and make adjustments as needed, and coordinate with IT professionals where necessary. This is done to provide web site and CMS services to users allowing them to manage the content on websites without significant web or technical expertise.

Job Duty Category Website Maintenance
Duty/Responsibility Provides maintenance for websites. This is done by periodically reviewing technology and practices used on these sites and making updates to third party code used or manually creating/updating code, providing requested upgrades/updates/changes to code at the request of key stakeholders, and making updates that are prompted by external factors (e.g., University policy changes, external requirements, user technology shifts, etc.). This is done to keep existing sites up to date with current technology, improve website performance, bring websites into compliance, and add necessary functionality.

Duty/Responsibility Provides support and gives guidance to MarComm leadership and departmental personnel. This is done by responding to requests for assistance to various web-related questions, and evaluating the best responses utilizing this positions’ expertise, experience, and professional network (if someone else within that network is better positioned to respond). This is done to provide assistance to MarComm professionals by proxy allow MarComm to provide better services.

Duty/Responsibility Meets with other MarComm units, or elsewhere on campus to discuss various web based projects. This is done by communicating with other units and departments on campus (or in the CSU system) to discuss the items on the agenda, provide professional opinions, provide expertise, make decisions, etc. This is done to provide a representative for the MarComm, or to provide professional expertise in cases where it would be helpful or necessary for this position to work with other entities for cross-entity initiatives.
