EMPLOYER: Edgewood Community Farm

POSITION: Farm Assistant (20 hours a week), three-month contract

COMPENSATION: $25/hour

LOCATION: Partially remote, but applicants must be located in Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia.

NOTES: Applicants must have a vehicle and be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted.

 

ABOUT THE JOB:

This is an opening for a Farm Assistant position at a new nonprofit farm in Northeast Washington, D.C. The position will generally involve a mixture of administrative and operations support for the nonprofit that runs the farm but will occasionally include physically assisting on the farm, participating in work days, supervising volunteers on the farm, etc. This is a three-month contract that may be renewed and increased to full-time depending on budget availability. This is an entry-level to intermediate position ideally suited for applicants with administrative and operations experience and interests in agriculture and urban farming. 

 

The administrative and operations portion of the contract are all fully remote, while the in-person activities must be accomplished at the farm’s physical location in Northeast Washington, D.C. The initial period of the contract will be heavily administrative in nature as the farm establishes operations.

 

ABOUT THE FARM:

Edgewood Community Farm, a nonprofit in the heart of Washington, D.C, operates on a membership-based model. Volunteers contribute to running the farm in exchange for access to the property, produce, flowers, mushrooms, and other products. The vision of the farm is to serve the community, including the neighborhood, farm members, and local shelters and organizations; to host community work days; and to provide a social area for members and the community. The farm broke ground in summer 2022. Currently, we are building out a wide variety of infrastructure, including growing rows, paths, etc. The farm, encompassing 7,500 square feet in D.C.’s Edgewood neighborhood, will include vegetables and flowers; tea garden; pollinator garden; compost station; berry patch; mushroom patch; and fruit trees.


Edgewood Community Farm is a registered 501(c)(3) organization (registered under “Edgewood Community Garden.”).

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Farm Assistant will report to the Executive Director (who will supervise and coach the Farm Assistant) and will assist with operations tasks, supervision of volunteers and woofers, and occasional physical work on the farm. Please note: The farm does not use heavy machinery and does not have livestock. The vast majority of the position’s responsibilities will be administrative and operations-based in nature, and not physical labor on the farm.

 

Primary responsibilities:

 

Operations (50%)

  • Scheduling and coordinating events and activities, including farm workdays, nonprofit board meetings, 1:1 check-ins with the Executive Director, and other events as appropriate.
  • Managing the farm’s email account and responding to queries from the public and farm members
  • Developing and implementing shared documents/spreadsheets to track data and information related to the operation of the farm.
  • Developing and writing standard operating procedures, processes, and practices (in collaboration with the Executive Director) on various farm-related operations.
  • Taking minutes at board meetings and organizing those notes.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, compliance work, including researching and applying for insurance and agricultural permits.
  • Developing template letters, emails, and communications for the purposes of farm operation.

Finance (15%)

  • Developing and implementing a system to keep track of receipts, reimbursements, and donations.
  • Purchasing materials for the farm using the farm’s bank account and funds.
  • Issuing reimbursements to volunteers and keeping track of transactions. 
  • Interacting with the farm’s accountant on tax preparation and other tax compliance matters.
  • Assist in grant writing and research in collaboration with our grant writing volunteers/members.

Supervision (15%)

  • Regularly contacting and following up with farm volunteers.
  • Participating in farm workdays and supervising/providing guidance to volunteers on outstanding projects/tasks.
  • Administering and supervising the farm’s woofing program, including liaising between the woofer and the Executive Director.
  • Developing and maintaining an active list of farm projects and activities, and delegating/assigning to volunteers and woofers as appropriate.

Agricultural and market research (10%)

  • Researching best practices and strategies for the planting, growing, harvesting, and distribution of vegetables, flowers, mushrooms and related products.
  • Conducting outreach with local restaurants to identify leads for collaboration, sales and distribution.

Physical labor (10%)

  • During periods when there is limited administrative work needed, the Farm Assistant will be expected to engage in outdoor projects, including planting, weeding, pruning, harvesting, transporting materials, and other minor physical tasks. 

 

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency with the following programs:
  • Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Forms)
  • Excel
  • Zoom
  • Mail merge
  • Squarespace
  • Experience with QuickBooks and Gusto (or similar software) is a plus but not required.
  • Educational requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree, OR;
  • High school diploma or associate’s degree with supplemental experience (including practical agricultural experience) may be substituted in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
  • General requirements:
  • Experience as an operations or administrative associate (or similar) preferred.
  • Understanding of basic finances, particularly as they relate to small businesses.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, including the ability to write clearly.
  • Ability to work well under limited supervision.
