About the program:


WRI’s Core Communications team manages strategy, outreach and content production in support of WRI leadership, programs, centers and international offices. The Editorial Team, a four-person team within Core Communications, oversees the quality of all content published on WRI.org, including the organization’s flagship Insights channel.


Insights
is the largest traffic-driver to WRI.org and a critical communications channel for the organization. Its researcher-written articles popularize WRI research; position WRI experts as thought leaders; demystify issues at the intersection of environment and development; and help expand the organization’s reach, reputation and impact. Insights content underpins much of WRI’s outreach efforts, including social media, newsletters, media outreach and more.


Job Highlight:

As Managing Editor, you’ll help manage the day-to-day operations of Insights.


The Managing Editor will be equal parts project manager and substantive editor. You’ll manage the Insights production schedule, including maintaining the editorial calendar, assigning editors, setting deadlines, and collaborating with researchers and other communications staff. You’ll also edit Insights articles from the idea stage to publication, ensuring pieces are clear, compelling and fit for audience.


You will be supported by a small central editorial team that provides quality control for WRI.org, as well as a larger Core Communications team and communications staff throughout WRI’s programs, centers and international offices.


You will report to the Editorial Director, Digital, who sets the overall content strategy for Insights and WRI.org.


What you will do:


Editorial Management (50%)

  • Work with Editorial Director in developing story ideas, reviewing article pitches and coaching authors through the writing and publishing process.
  • Using WRI’s project management system (Asana), oversee the article production process from the idea stage through publication.
  • Maintain the Insights editorial calendar and production schedule, including assigning editors; setting and adjusting deadlines; and liaising with graphic designers, web developers, contractors and other teams as needed.
  • Assist Editorial Director in setting KPIs, reviewing analytics and implementing editorial strategy.
  • Ensure all articles go through proper quality assurance processes, in accordance with WRI’s standards and guidelines.
  • Backfill for Editorial Director as needed.
  • Coach staff in writing, editing and digital content best practices.


Editing and Writing (50%)

  • Provide substantive and copy edits to articles written by WRI researchers and communications staff.
  • Work closely with WRI’s graphic design team to produce multimedia assets that enhance our storytelling, including data visualizations, maps, charts, videos, photography and more.
  • Work closely with researchers and communications professionals to translate technical research into compelling and accessible prose.
  • Optimize content for search engines and uphold other digital best practices.
  • Brainstorm story ideas to support WRI outreach opportunities, including research launches and relevant news events.
  • Write and edit other content as needed.


What you will need:

  • Education: You have a completed Bachelor’s degree. Studies in journalism or communications a plus.
  • Experience: You have 7-10 years of experience in journalism, science writing, publishing or other related fields. You have experience in a senior editorial role such as a deputy or managing editor. You have managed writers/editors and maintained an editorial production schedule. Previous work experience in the environment, sustainability and/or international development considered a plus
  • You have worked as a professional writer and editor, ideally in a digital media environment.
  • You have experience producing digital-first content, with a working knowledge of SEO and other digital best practices;
  • You have used Google Analytics and other tools to design and execute data-informed content strategies;
  • Familiarity with Drupal or other content management systems preferred;
  • Languages: Strong command of written English skills required.
  • Requirements: Existing US work authorization required. WRI is unable to sponsor visa work authorization for this position.


Potential Salary:

$79,000-$106,000 Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors. WRI offers a competitive remuneration and benefits package.
