Position Summary

5 Lakes Energy is hiring a Consultant or Senior Consultant (depending on relevant experience and skills) to help advance clean energy policy in the Midwest. As a small, well-respected firm with broad expertise and a range of sought-after practice areas, the Consultant should expect to work on a wide variety of projects in the effort to mitigate climate change and accelerate the clean energy transition, with a focus on analytical modeling to calculate social, economic, and environmental impacts of policies in the energy sector and to move electric utilities to fully decarbonized but reliable and affordable power supply. 5 Lakes Energy works consistently in Michigan but also engages elsewhere across the Midwest and the US.

Applicants should be collaborative forward-thinkers who are passionate about advancing clean energy and an equitable transition to a low carbon economy. This role will be fully remote with a preference for employees located in Michigan or the Midwest. Occasional travel may be required. The Consultant will report to 5 Lakes Energy’s Managing Partner, Douglas Jester.

Responsibilities

The Consultant will work with minimal supervision and is expected to occasionally represent 5 Lakes Energy in online and in-person settings. The primary responsibilities include:

·       Performing analytical modeling tasks to calculate social, economic, and environmental impacts of policies in the energy sector

·       Performing analytical modeling tasks in the context of electric utility integrated resource planning and subsidiary planning efforts.

·       Assisting with the preparation of analysis and expert witness testimony in regulatory proceedings such as rate cases or integrated resource planning proceedings

·       Monitoring energy-related activities in the regulatory and legislative space

·       Representing 5 Lakes Energy in stakeholder engagement activities in regulatory, legislative, and local government forums

The ideal candidate will possess excellent analytical and communication skills, and be highly adaptable to work on projects in the following areas:

·       Energy-climate impact analysis at the regional, state, or municipal

·       Utility resource/bulk power system modeling

·       Transmission and wholesale power markets

·       Energy storage and microgrid performance and design

·       levels

·       Electric distribution planning

·       Behind-the-meter/distributed energy resource modeling

·       Energy efficiency and demand response performance and program design

·       Transportation and building electrification

Minimum Requirements

·       Background in economics, law, public policy, engineering, or related discipline

·       Excellent quantitative, analytical, and statistical skills

·       Professional experience or familiarity with energy/public utility regulation, clean energy technologies, decarbonization strategies, and climate policy

·       Ability to communicate technical economic, regulatory, and financial concepts clearly and persuasively to experts, non-experts, advocates, and policymakers

·       Ability to work with minimal supervision in a remote office setting

·       Excellent organizational and time management skills

·       High level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Preferred Qualifications

·       3+ years of experience in energy sector including, but not limited to distributed energy resources, utility accounting or finance, bulk power system modeling, beneficial electrification, climate planning

·       Prior consulting experience and established relationships in energy sector

·       Knowledge of energy- and climate-related federal and state data sources/analytical tools

·       Statistical and geospatial programming skills (Stata, SPSS, R, ArcGIS)
