Position Summary:

The Editorial Specialist (Copy Editor) belongs to the Content Enablement group which supports editing, production and delivery of white papers, books, manuals, study guides, learning assets, practice aids, newsletters and other content to support ISACA members and industry practitioners who work in information security, cybersecurity, information systems audit, risk management, governance, compliance, privacy and related fields. The copyeditor primarily supports lighter surface editing intended to finish mature content and performs other editorial/production functions as needed. Additionally, the copyeditor may address early-stage manuscripts to prepare them for external subject matter expert/peer review stage of content development. The copyeditor will participate in enterprise-level publishing and content supply chain reengineering programs and projects as assigned, and will support content management system, taxonomy, and adjacent disciplines.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Copyedit later-stage draft manuscripts and publications, including, but not limited to: books, white papers, articles, newsletters, online courses, slide presentations, exam questions, exam candidate information guides and CPE policies, including comparison and syncing of publications with each other.
  • Analyze and understand content at a high level, then normalize and/or optimize content structure, spelling, grammar, and formatting, considering end-user appearance and/or look and feel.
  • Proofread and normalize content against conventions of standard English grammar, spelling (US not UK) and style; ISACA’s business requirements; and/or a model template or form provided for a particular engagement.
  • Follow ISACA style and apply global ISACA editorial guidelines (and/or other project-specific styles) as documented and agreed for a particular engagement.
  • Developmentally edit early-stage rough-draft manuscripts, including, but not limited to: books, white papers, articles, newsletters, online courses, slide presentations, exam questions, exam candidate information guides and CPE policies, including comparison and syncing of publications with each other
  • Distill relevant information and present it in an easy-to-understand format; supplement text with photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams and charts, as necessary
  • Developmental edits address all of the same attributes as copyedits, but typically require more sentence-level rewriting, and/or paragraph (or broader) reorganization
  • Developmental editors supply and/or revise title, abstract, headings, table of contents hierarchy, figure labels and source attributions, in addition to fully editing main text for conceptual and logical integrity, as well as factual accuracy, in so far as the editor’s experience and expertise permits.
  • Any ideas, assertions, arguments or claims in draft manuscripts that are not adequately substantiated should be questioned and challenged in comments back to the project editorial leaders(s) and author(s), along with explanation as to noted deficiencies and suggestions or strategies for author’s remediation.
  • Collaborate with professional practice/editorial leaders, authors and subject matter experts to deliver high-quality content
  • Continually improve processes for content development
  • Support delivery of ISACA periodicals including production functions as assigned
  • Participate in enterprise-level publishing and content supply chain reengineering programs and projects as assigned, and support content management system, taxonomy and adjacent disciplines

Education & Experience:

Required Field of Study:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, English or Journalism (or other writing-intensive program)

Minimum Years of Experience Required: 3

Description of Minimum Experience Required:

  • Editorial/publishing/publication development

Preferred Field of Study:

  • English, journalism, information science or related graduate degree from an accredited university

Preferred Years of Experience: 5

Description of Preferred Experience:

  • Domain knowledge in IT audit/assurance, information security/ cybersecurity, risk, privacy, compliance, governance of enterprise IT (GEIT)
  • Experience writing for an association or non-profit
  • Publications product development
  • Experience writing for an international audience
  • Professional Association/volunteer engagement
  • Experience with information management & content management systems
  • Familiarity with XML, XHTML, JSON, DITA, XSLT, scripting concepts and/or willingness to engage in additional learning in these areas
