Grassroot Soccer (GRS) is a rapidly growing adolescent health organization that leverages the power of soccer to educate, inspire, and mobilize at-risk youth in developing countries to overcome their greatest health challenges, live healthier, more productive lives, and be agents for change in their communities. Since 2002, GRS programs have reached 13 million young people in over 60 countries with life-saving HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health information and services. Grassroot Soccer is looking to continue scaling its impact via partnerships over the next five years.

Role Overview

The Business Development Coordinator is responsible for business development systems management across GRS’s restricted donor portfolio (US Government, foundation, and private sector), including proposal development, institutional donor prospecting and stewarding, information systems management, grant cycle tracking, and grant writing. This position is also primarily responsible for ensuring clear, transparent, consistent, and frequent communication between the global and in-country business development leads.

Position Summary: The Business Development Coordinator will work closely with other members of Functional Units (Business Development, Research & Curriculum, Monitoring & Evaluation, Finance & Operations) and Impact Units (GRS South Africa, Zambia, and Global Partnerships) to maintain, identify and secure donors to support GRS’s strategic goals. Their day-to-day responsibilities will be in close collaboration with the Business Development Manager and will include the following primary areas: 1) proposal development; 2) proposal planning/positioning; 3) Global Business Development Unit systems management; 4) partner/donor engagement. The Business Development Coordinator should be a highly skilled and detailed writer, team-oriented collaborator, proactive problem-solver, and innovative thinker who can effectively engage a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders. The Business Development Coordinator should be comfortable working across teams within a matrixed organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Proposal Development (50%)

  • Develop timelines and manage the proposal development process across GRS to respond quickly and efficiently to opportunities. This will include managing proposal team logistics (calls, calendars, timelines) and quality control (compilation, review, copy editing, submission, etc.)
  • Draft “go-no-go” proposal evaluation assessments for new business development opportunities and provide initial strategic recommendations on design options and potential partners
  • Lead and support the writing of proposal sections and processes across a range of proposals for Government, foundation, and private sector donors
  • Write and coordinate progress reports, program updates, and other supporting documents

Internal Systems Management (30%)

  • Maintain the Global Business Development Unit’s electronic filing system, including proposal development materials, intellectual property, templates, reports, etc.
  • Coordinate internal team calls, meetings and follow up including scheduling and note taking
  • Maintain GRS’s opportunity tracking systems

New Business, Partnership Development, and Donor Stewardship (20%)

  • Conduct background research on funding patterns, philanthropic interests, and other relevant connections/donors for GRS
  • Support the Business Development team with rapid desk reviews, landscape analyses, and research for forecast or released/active proposal opportunities
  • Assist program teams with donor reporting, including content and copy edit reviews
  • Create, maintain, and routinely update GRS’s strategic BD materials including general GRS background and overviews, organizational capacity statements, country summaries, technical slide decks/briefers for GRS priority geographies for use during external engagement

 Qualification, Skills, and Knowledge Requirements

Essential qualifications include:

  • 2-4 years’ experience working in business development, with exposure to international NGOs, government organizations, and/or corporations/foundations
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with a wide range of external and internal stakeholders, including developing grant proposals and reports and facilitating calls 
  • Willingness to work independently and flexibly across different time zones and teams and eligible to work in the US
  • Superior time management skills and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tight timelines across teams and conduct thorough and timely follow-up
  • Interest in or knowledge of health issues affecting young people and communities in low- and middle-income countries

As well as:

  • Experience writing grant proposals, reports, timelines, and budgets
  • Experience conducting desk research on fundraising opportunities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail
  • Experience working in international development and/or global health

Desirable:

  • Experience working at a mid- to large-size international NGO
  • Experience working internationally and/or in different cultural contexts
