Solar Nonprofit Seeks Director Of Engagement 🔥

We’re looking for someone who knows in their heart that “the revolution will not be staffed.” Someone who understands that making a lasting impact at a national level means we have to build a movement. Someone who can’t wait to roll up their sleeves and build the volunteer power necessary to build that movement. Is that you?

Solar United Neighbors is changing the world by creating an energy system that’s inclusive and equitable — with rooftop solar power as the cornerstone. We organize local communities across the United States to go solar, join together, and fight for their energy rights. We’re growing fast — expanding into new states, building new partnerships, and offering new services.

We’re searching for a director of engagement who believes in our mission, who wants to help us grow, and who wants to grow with us.

Who are you?

  • You put creativity, humor, and empathy at the center of your work.
  • You broadcast energy and optimism.
  • You invite feedback and use it to improve your work.
  • You want to use your organizing and engagement skills to make the world better.

What's the job?

Interested? Here’s what Year One (and, given the scope, Year Two) is all about. For an ambitious organizer, this is the stuff of dreams — taking our current engagement work and scaling it up to all 50 states (plus DC!).

  • Build our nationwide “solar army” of volunteers. We need people in every state and from across the political spectrum to get involved, self-organize, and fight for their energy rights -- with our staff’s support and coordination. You’ll partner with our state directors to develop, pilot, and scale an on-the-ground volunteer recruitment, training, and leadership development program (using the Snowflake Model [1]).

  • Design organization-wide engagement pyramids. Our current engagement programming is working well on an individual basis (in-person info sessions, volunteer activities, online advocacy actions, and more!). You’ll take us to the next level by stacking and linking our activities into engagement pyramids [2], designing pathways for our supporters to progressively engage more deeply with us and our work.

  • Reboot our membership program. A core part of our mission is to serve as the national association of both homeowners and small businesses who have gone solar (think of it as the “AARP of Solar”). To do this, you’ll rethink and relaunch our paid membership program. You’ll be in charge of developing and testing products, services, and information that drive member growth (and revenue).

  • Manage the 25th annual National Solar Tour. In partnership with the American Solar Energy Society (ASES), we run the largest grassroots renewable energy event in the country. We engage thousands of solar homeowners and small businesses and tens of thousands of people interested in learning more about solar -- all of them potential volunteers, members, and advocates.

  • Expand our partnership program. No organization is an island! We regularly build connections with other organizations, companies, and networks that can amplify our message and give us access to new groups of supporters. You’ll take the lead in developing an effective framework for creating and sustaining relationships with these groups.

Skills and experience

If you can accomplish the above, you've got what it takes. There’s no specific educational background required. Realistically, though, you probably have a background in organizing or other practical experience in building a scalable grassroots movement. We take inclusion and teamwork seriously here, so you’ll also need a solid history of working in (and leading) diverse, cross-functional teams.

Our team

You'll report to the Vice President of Growth, and you’ll work with a committed and creative team of renewable energy leaders, policy wonks, communications experts, and community organizers on projects with ambitious goals and national impact.

You’ll supervise our two engagement specialists, who are responsible for running our on-the-ground engagement events, directly engaging with our volunteers, and developing new approaches to build the movement.

We have nearly 40 staff members working across 12 states (and growing each year). Half of our team is located in the Washington, DC area. You’ll work with everyone.

We welcome candidates of diverse backgrounds and experience to apply, including people of color, women, LGBTQi, differently abled, and those with a non-traditional education.

We're an equal opportunity employer and we value diversity at our organization. We don’t discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

This is a full-time position. Most of our staff work across the country, so we welcome both local and remote candidates. You can work from wherever you like. If you’re in the D.C. area, our offices are located in a bright, sunlit building directly above the Dupont Circle metro station. If you live somewhere else, we have Slack and video conferencing to keep us connected.
