Position Title: Housing Justice Organizer

Duration: Full time, Limited Duration, position ending June 30, 2023

Compensation: $42,500 - 46,000 per year depending on experience; generous and progressive benefits including medical and dental care 100% of premiums paid by Unite Oregon, paid wellness leave, vacation, flex time, and personal days off; technology reimbursement; 4 hours personal time off/week, $300 annual FSA contribution, 2.5% 401K contribution after 6 months

We believe that all people can become leaders and agents of change in the areas of racial justice, immigrant and refugee rights, affordable housing, climate justice and economic prosperity. Unite Oregon is building a unified intercultural movement for justice in our state.

 

Position Description

Unite Oregon is seeking a culturally responsive community organizer to help immigrants, refugees, and BIPOC build power and meet their needs. The focus of this position will be to  provide housing case management services immigrant, refugee, and BIPOC community members experiencing any form of housing discrimination, threat of eviction, or in need or rent assistance. This position will report to the Housing Director, and work closely with the Service to Organizing Director. 

 

Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities, in collaboration with chapter staff, are as follows:

 

Community Engagement and Service Delivery


  • Conduct intakes and referrals to provide community members with housing case management services and help them create a plan to become self-advocates for their own housing cases
  • If resources become available, connect community members to rent assistance and housing resources, and help them complete any necessary applications to access rent assistance dollars so our community members can remain adequately housed.
  • Assist Housing Director and policy staff to engage community members in a housing-focused policy campaign and in renters’ education programs per our service-to-organizing model, grounded in the belief that those most impacted by inequity in housing are the most powerful and effective future leaders of the housing justice movement.
  • Assist in outreach to build trust in the community so members feel comfortable approaching Unite Oregon for direct service support
  • Assist in building out Unite Oregon’s service delivery model
  • Assist in outreach and recruitment for housing-related community meetings and organizing events
  • Support direct service projects in Unite Oregon chapters, including COVID-19 rapid response work as needed

Project Management


  • Managing and tracking of deliverables and assist in reporting 
  • Collect data on housing cases as outlined by Housing Director and Service to Organizing Director in Unite Oregon and partner databases
  • Participate in Unite Oregon staff meetings, retreats, and board meetings as needed
  • Assist in communication support for the project both internally and externally via social media, email, phone, newsletters, earned media, etc. 

Required Qualifications

 

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative, while maintaining solid communication with and accountability to the Executive Director, Housing Director, and Service to Organizing Director
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills
  • Trauma-informed and culturally specific approach to direct service delivery
  • Proficient with technology including word processing, powerpoint, spreadsheets, social media, Zoom/Google Meets
  • Anti-oppression, anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion work experience
  • Availability to work during evenings and weekends as needed
  • Bilingual and bicultural in one of the following languages: Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, and/or Somali. 

Preferred Skills and Experience


  • At least two - three years experience in grassroots community organizing, campaigns, or direct service work
  • At least two - three years experience working on housing issues and policies 
  • Resident of Oregon and strong ties to the state
  • Ability to work remotely and to travel to meetings and events across the state: Portland, Salem, and Medford as necessary once it is deemed safe post-pandemic
