Position Title: Policy Organizer

Duration: Full Time, Ongoing

Compensation: 42,500 to $ 50,000 per year depending on experience; generous and progressive benefits including medical and dental care 100% of premiums paid by Unite Oregon, paid wellness leave, vacation, flex time, and personal days off; technology reimbursement; 4 hours personal time off/week, $300 annual FSA contribution, 2.5% 401K contribution after 6 months.

Overview

Unite Oregon is a grassroots community organization with four chapters including Washington, Multnomah, Clackamas counties and the Rogue Valley. Unite Oregon works across urban and rural divides to build a unified intercultural movement for housing justice, environmental justice, reimagining community safety, equitable economic justice, health equity, and education equity in Oregon. We represent and are led by black, indigineous, people of color, immigrants and refugees, rural communities, and people experiencing poverty.


This position reports to the Policy/Political and Executive Director.


Position Description

The Policy organizer will work closely with the Policy/Political team and UO/A members, partners, and staff to develop, fund, and execute a policy, political and legislative program that builds power for our communities. Major areas of work include Unite Oregon’s six pillar issue areas, working to elect candidates of color that represent our communities, and membership development. The Policy/Political Director reports to the Deputy Director and Executive Director.

Position Responsibilities

  • Work with Political Director and team to develop and strengthen UO/A’s policy and political program
  • Carry out organizing and field activities on assigned Unite Oregon issue-area policies for legislative session and campaigns (i.e. Reimagining Community Safety, Health Equity, Housing Justice, Education Equity, Economic Justice, Climate Justice)
  • Work with policy team, development team, issue leads and other chapter staff to develop community-led policy campaigns in assigned issue area
  • Work with political director to implement field plans for UOA-endorsed candidates and ballot measures
  • Manage field tasks including but not limited to recruiting, training, and managing volunteers
  • Manage field tools like VAN, Bill Tracker, data analysis, OLIS, phone/text bank applications, etc.
  • Carry out voter contact and engagement
  • Represent UO/A with partner organizations, coalitions and alliances as assigned
  • Support grant writing and reporting
  • Other duties as assigned

Desired Experience:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice
  • Experience in electoral, legislative, civic engagement, or political campaigns
  • Familiarity with legislative and campaign processes
  • Experience with candidate endorsement processes
  • Experience with political field work including but not limited to phone banking and door knocking
  • Familiarity with latest technology and voter outreach tools
  • Effective communicator, both written and verbal
  • Ability to research and present data
  • Experience leading projects and groups supporting
  • Strong relationships with progressive movements in Oregon
  • Ability to work long hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed

*extended hours will be discussed beforehand and flex time off will be coordinated accordingly
