Your Position With TNC

The Field Project Coordinator is a staff member of the Stewardship and Field Department (SAF) in The Nature Conservancy’s Florida Chapter (TNC). The position works under the supervision of the SAF Field Program Director and is based in the Florida Panhandle region in or near Tallahassee. The Field Project Coordinator develops, manages, and advances conservation projects, plans, and methods across Florida with an emphasis on public and private conservation lands in the Panhandle region. The Field Project Coordinator collaborates with colleagues across the southeastern U.S.

Essential Functions

The Field Project Coordinator provides technical leadership and support for TNC strategic projects and priorities (e.g., native groundcover restoration) and partnerships (e.g., Apalachicola Regional Stewardship Alliance (ARSA). They establish and manage partnership relationships including stewardship of formal agreements and grants from submittal through implementation and reporting. They plan and implement restoration and natural resource management projects that advance conservation strategies. They address critical threats to Florida ecosystems from a “big picture” natural community perspective with infrequent focus on individual species. They foster cross-boundary collaboration within TNC and with partners. They provide site or landscape-level information relevant to projects. They coordinate community support and represent TNC via a wide range of partnership roles.

Responsibilities and Scope

  • Manage and coordinate field and partnership projects around the state (e.g., the Apalachicola Regional Stewardship Alliance, a 11-partner, 20+ year initiative among federal, state, and private land management entities with a common goal of holistic ecosystem restoration, management, and protection)
  • Serve as a member on strategy and project teams across the Chapter and with other TNC business units
  • Manage staff, with responsibility for performance management, training, and career development
  • In coordination with supervisor, seek, obtain, and manage grant opportunities in support of the Chapter’s conservation strategies
  • Participate as a TNC representative in Cooperative Invasive Species Management Areas (CISMAs) including in the Panhandle region
  • Provide oversight of non-native invasive species prevention and management, groundcover restoration, and reforestation field projects
  • Participate in wildlife habitat and population recovery projects in conjunction with other staff
  • Financial responsibility may include budget development and management and negotiations/contract development with vendors
  • Assist with fire management, invasives species management, groundcover restoration, and reforestation on TNC preserves, as requested and in collaboration with stewardship staff
  • Ensure program compliance with internal policies and external requirements
  • Under minimal supervision, make independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances
  • Participates in philanthropy events and tours as requested

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing staff or volunteers.
  • Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, government officials, internal scientists.
  • Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
  • Experience in training.
  • Must have valid driver's license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated
  • Knowledge of land management, conservation practices, and conservation science, particularly fire management, invasive species prevention and management, upland restoration, and wetland restoration.
  • Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience and proficiency with GIS and the use of GPS mapping
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and natural resource preservation
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timelines
  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
  • Ability to obtain a Florida State Restricted Use Pesticide License within 6 months of hire
  • Ability to complete Fire Fighter Type 2 certification within 6 months of hire
  • Ability to maintain at least Fire Fighter Type 2 certification with annual Work Capacity Test at the arduous level (3 mi, 45lb pack in 45 min or less) and refresher coursework
  • Experience managing, facilitating, and participating in interagency working groups
  • Experience with complex project management
  • Success in writing and obtaining grants
