Position Title: Economic Justice Director

Duration: Full Time, Ongoing

Compensation: $60,000-$75,000 per year depending on experience; generous and progressive benefits including medical and dental care 100% of premiums paid by Unite Oregon, paid wellness leave, vacation, flex time, and personal days off; technology reimbursement; 4 hours personal time off/week, $300 annual FSA contribution, 2.5% 401K contribution after 6 months.

Position Description

Unite Oregon is seeking an experienced, culturally responsive Economic Justice Director who will lead the Equitable Economic Development work to build community investment mechanisms for communities that have been historically excluded from economic investment while revitalizing historically working-class communities. Unite Oregon seeks to develop and implement an economic ecosystem that generates wealth and promotes asset creation through workforce and business development pipelines. This position will report to the Community Development Director, and coordinate with the Housing Director and Climate Directors, and Community Safety Leads and work closely with Chapter Directors and Political Director. 


Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities, in collaboration with other departments and staff, are as follows:

The Economic Justice Director will build equitable economic development strategies and partnerships to reduce poverty for low-income community members who identify as immigrants, refugees, and people of color by implementing a workforce training program and small business incubator that connects low-income clients to living-wage jobs in traditional and emerging sectors.

 

Economic Development 

This position requires community engagement, organizing, and policy advocacy around a range of issues, especially but not limited to economic development, justice, affordable housing, transit-oriented development, civil rights, and numerous other policy areas.


  • Manage, administer and lead economic justice staff
  • Develop and implement a workforce training center and small business incubator. Recruit and establish a direct partnership with major workforce institutions in healthcare, technology, construction, and green job industries. 
  • Maintain an East Portland Community Prosperity (EPCP) stakeholder committee made up of business and workforce agencies to help guide implementation of the workforce training and small business incubator program 
  • Integrate Unite Oregon’s Pan-Immigrant Leadership Organizing Training (PILOT) leadership development program with the EPCP initiative
  • Hire and terminate staff

Project Management

  • Manage all Economic Justice related grant reports 
  • Track expenses, manage  grant project invoices and track deliverables 
  • Oversee small business and entrepreneurship projects 
  • Develop board and regular reports to Community Development Director 
  • Participate in Unite Oregon staff meetings, retreats, and board meetings as needed
  • Manage communication support for Economic Justice projects both internally and externally via social media, email, phone, newsletters, earned media, etc.

Shift balance of power among decision makers 

  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders in government;  nonprofit sectors,  and with major workforce institutions in healthcare, technology, construction, and green job industries,  in order to remove institutional barriers
  • Participate in coalitions that align with Unite Oregon’s strategic plan, mission and vision

Fundraising 

  • Engage in fundraising Grant Manager to fundraise for the economic development work 
  • Assist in developing a grassroots fundraising program with annual goals including organizing and hosting local fundraiser events and  membership drives.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative, while maintaining solid communication with and accountability to Executive Director and Development Director
  • Experience working in social justice with diverse communities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • At least two years’ experience in economic development and/or, workforce and small business program development 
  • Bilingual and bicultural: especially (but not limited to) Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese, and/or Somali. Preferred but not required.
  • Ability to travel to meetings and events across the County, Salem, and Medford as necessary once pandemic restrictions ease
  • Availability to work during evenings and weekends as needed
