Position Summary

The Conservation Programs Team (CPT) in the Chief Conservation Office plays a critical role in supporting global conservation implementation by providing the frameworks, approaches, and tools for TNC to maximize its impact and achieve the organization’s 2030 goals. The CPT’s core program areas are strategy development, conservation portfolio management, and monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL). The Conservation Impact Program Manager is a key member of the MEL program, reporting to the Senior Director, Conservation Impact who directs the MEL program and is responsible for TNC’s approach to measuring impact.

The MEL program is implementing two interrelated strategies to, first, partner with business units to overcome challenges to measuring impact and, second, apply lessons learned to advance systems and standards across TNC and the conservation sector. The MEL program supports leaders in TNC’s regions to drive implementation. An overarching responsibility of the MEL program is to produce an annual impact report for TNC’s 2030 Goals.

This is a full-time position. The location is flexible; however, the program manager should anticipate a need to develop modes of working with a core team located between UTC – 4 and UTC – 6 (i.e., Eastern to Mountain Daylight Time Zones). The salary range is $76,500-$100,000 based on an Arlington, VA, USA location. Actual salary will be based on location and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Conservation Impact Program Manager will partner with the Senior Director, Conservation Impact and project leads to ensure successful implementation of the program strategy and delivery of projects to scope, schedule, and budget. The program manager will be essential to the success of the annual impact report, annual MEL fund (internal grant process), the MEL regional leaders group, the MEL approach and framework, and other mechanisms aimed at providing support and promoting learning amongst staff. The program manager will be responsible for shepherding the program’s learning approach, involving collaborative problem-solving, prototyping, frequent testing, and feedback. The program manager should be adept at transferring their experience with MEL to the TNC context, while also being open to new ways of approaching MEL. The program manager should possess excellent attention to detail, an ability to manage complexity and interdependencies across projects, and ability to gather and manage diverse sources of information. It is preferred that the program manager have experience with Lean/Agile/Scrum approaches to project management and helping to develop presentations and reports for executives.

 

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in conservation sciences, environmental sciences, social sciences, business, finance, political science, public policy, international relations, international development or related field and at least 4 years related experience, or equivalent combination.
  • Experience managing complex projects or strategic initiatives in an unstructured environment.
  • Experience developing and/or implementing MEL plans or activities.
  • Experience working with a diverse, multicultural set of stakeholders.
  • Experience researching, critically analyzing, and evaluating information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive reports and recommendations for strategy and action.
  • MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) skills experience.
  • Master’s degree in conservation sciences, environmental sciences, social sciences, business, finance, political science, public policy, international relations, international development or related field and at least 2 years related experience or equivalent combination
  • Strong project management skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Familiarity or demonstrated experience developing and/or implementing MEL plans or activities related to nature conservation.
  • Experience facilitating meetings, project/program review and learning sessions, design workshops, and MEL planning processes.
  • Experience with Lean, Agile, and/or Scrum methodologies.
  • Familiarity or knowledge of integrating GIS with measuring impact.
  • Experience with producing impact reports or similar.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a program and complex projects with numerous interdependencies.
  • Ability to work well in a highly matrixed, decentralized and collaborative organization. Possesses strong interpersonal skills and political savvy. Must be a team player.
  • Self-starter capable of proactively delivering on requirements.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, develop storyboards, and frame problems.
  • Ability to quickly explore and decide on solutions to complex issues which may arise.
  • Experience managing up with a steering committee or executive sponsors.
  • Critical analytical thinking and excellent English writing skills are essential.
  • Familiarity and knowledge related to organizational change, especially in a large, distributed organization.
  • Ability to develop and drive new ideas and approaches.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary context. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet time sensitive deadlines.
