Salary: $115,000 - $125,000

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, your food and health watchdog, is one of the nation’s leading public health advocacy organizations with a 50-year record of fighting for science in the public interest. CSPI envisions a healthy population with reduced impact and burden of preventable diseases and an equitable food system that makes healthy, sustainable food accessible to all. 

We’ve led efforts to win passage of many state and local policies to improve school foods and remove sugary drinks from children’s menus. National policy successes include the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act; Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act; Food Safety Modernization Act; and Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act. 


POSITION SUMMARY

Over the past two years, CSPI has engaged in an extensive DEI organizational change process, including creating a DEI Task Force and implementing task force recommendations, racial equity staff training, leadership equity coaching, organizational assessments, and more. This newly created position will build upon that work, continuing to embed our equity commitment into the organization's culture and policies, while supporting us in taking the next steps on our equity journey. 

This position is a strategic advisor to the Executive Director on organizational DEI programs and policies, will serve on the Executive Management Team, and reports to the Chief Operating Officer. They will also work closely with the DEI Committee to design and implement the organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion strategic initiatives while supporting training and education, staff engagement, staff relations, and organizational accountability. The Director of DEI will also partner with the Director of Human Resources to develop strategies that ensure DEI and HR initiatives and programs align with CSPI’s core values and our racial justice organizational change process and commitment. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES 

DEI Responsibilities: (80%)

  • Develop CSPI’s DEI vision, mission, and framework, including broader implementation of CSPI’s DEI Statement and Values.
  • Develop and operationalize CSPI’s DEI initiatives and chair the DEI Committee.
  • Develop and implement initiatives for staff and leadership to strengthen cultural competency, improve understanding of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other areas of individual identity, and increase awareness and support for equity and inclusion values.
  • Create project plans, benchmarks, and deliverables for DEI initiatives; and implement and monitor systems to track metrics and measurements for success.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Human Resources and recruiting teams to review and implement recruiting and hiring strategies to diversify staff and intern applicant pipelines.
  • Research best practices to establish sound and innovative processes, policies, and programs.

HR Responsibilities: (20%)

  • Collaborate with the Director of Human Resources to update and maintain CSPI personnel policies to ensure they advance and support an equitable and inclusive workplace.
  • Help manage CSPI’s intern program including program assessment, intern recruitment, and organizing social and professional development events. 
  • Assist with full cycle recruiting including drafting job descriptions with hiring teams, sourcing, screening applications, scheduling interviews, and checking references. 
  • Help manage and assess CSPI’s performance management system to ensure alignment with CSPI’s core values.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND QUALITIES

  • No less than 4 years of experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion with an emphasis on human resources, diversity programs, recruitment, performance management, and employee relations.
  • Strong cultural competency, including an understanding of power dynamics and intersecting axis of diversity and how these attributes play out in a workplace.
  • Ability to leverage insights through data analytics (assessment, analysis, and reporting) of diversity and inclusion metrics. 
  • Proven interpersonal skills, including the ability to actively listen, collaborate, build relationships, influence, manage conflict, and problem solve. 
  • Experience developing and delivering workforce training is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and a highly organized, process-focused aptitude. 
  • Ability to manage sensitive situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.

COMPENSATION

The salary range is $115,000 to $125,000, based on experience. CSPI offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes: 3 weeks of annual vacation leave; additional paid holiday leave between December 24 and January 1; 8 weeks of paid parental leave; excellent medical and dental insurance with CSPI paying a significant portion of employee and dependent premiums; and a three percent employer match contribution to the retirement plan after one year of service.
