The Tree Improvement Project Manager will be responsible for managing a complex tree research and partnership project that will span multiple departments, programs, federal agencies, and non-profit partners. This person serving in this position will deliver excellent organization, communication, and accountability measures to support The Nature Conservancy’s ambitious tree improvement project shared by the North America Science and North America Natural Climate Solutions programs, in coordination with the Connecticut Chapter.

This position will manage a complex three year project to increase the capacity, speed, and scientific ability of public and private partners to breed a selected set of tree species (green ash, white ash, black ash, American beech, Eastern hemlock) to be resistant to the invasive forest pests that are imperiling their survival at landscape scales. The Tree Improvement Program Manager will be responsible for coordinating the many parties that will act together within the larger program, in order to ensure responsible allocation of funding, appropriate designation of projects and tasks, recruitment of the best suited partners, completion of complex administrative duties, and timely fulfillment of financial and narrative reporting needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Tree Improvement Project Manager will establish project goals and success factors in direct consultation with TNC and USFS leaders. They will utilize best project management practices to develop project plans, budgets, metrics and schedules with input and buy-in from key stakeholders and team members. They will create and distribute internal and external communications on mutually agreed upon timelines to ensure clear expectations. Throughout the project lifecycle, the Project Manager will monitor and measure project progress, conduct corrective action as necessary, and communicate project status information to all stakeholders. At intervals set via consensus and/or known requirements, they will collect and synthesize multiple partner reports into periodic comprehensive reports as required by the funding entity. They will collaboratively solve complex problems in the face of uncertainty or roadblocks. They will prepare reports to funders. They will act as a resource to other staff and project managers to provide project management guidance, training, and expertise.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • The geographic scope of the work will include the current and projected ranges of the focal tree species.                                          
  • Act independently and in supervisor’s stead, as needed; exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
  • Develop and implement workflow management and tracking to ensure project and program-wide goals and strategies are achieved.
  • Ensure programmatic commitments, Conservancy policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
  • Manage and implement multiple complex projects, including coordinating project teams both within TNC and across partner organizations, setting deadlines, and ensuring accountability.
  • Manage project spending and allocation, and assist with budget modification and development if/when financial conditions change.
  • Write and edit narrative technical reports derived from partners’ reporting to fulfill reporting requirements.
  • Interface efficiently and respectfully with a variety of administrative and professional staff, including training and professional development.
  • Travel occasionally (estimated: 3 to 4 trips per year involving one or more overnight stay per each), working long and flexible hours as needed during required travel.
  • Self-management of time and communication of reasonable needs within anticipated project schedules and timelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related experience or equivalent combination, of relevance to tree improvement or project management.
  • 2 years of project management experience or 1 year acting as a project lead.
  • Experience in managing and tracking multiple projects; or managing project teams and working with cross-functional staff.
  • Experience managing scheduling, functional, and financial aspects of small to large projects that range from short to long term.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree or certification of relevance to tree improvement or project management (e.g. MSc, MBA, other).
  • Education or demonstrated sincere interest in related science fields, such as; forestry, horticulture, conservation genetics, entomology, agriculture, or similar.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and implement complex processes.
  • Experience managing projects using software tools such as Microsoft Project, Trello, Basecamp, or others.
  • Experience supervising staff, interns and/or volunteers.
  • Proficiency in interpreting guidelines and interpreting scientific or statistical data presentations.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and public speaking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to negotiate, influence, and persuade
  • Successful experience implementing strategic program goals.
