The Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans (IARA) is seeking an Executive Director with the skills, experience, and commitment needed to build the capacity of IARA and the powerful movement to preserve and strengthen retirement security.

IARA is a statewide organization, founded in 2002, with over 257,000 members organizing to win concrete improvements in retirees’ lives. The mission of IARA is to ensure social and economic justice and full civil rights for all Illinoisans so that they may retire with dignity and economic security.

The Executive Director is responsible for the achievement of the organization's mission and programmatic, administrative, and financial objectives, and reports to the Board of Directors. IARA’s office is located at 2229 S. Halsted Street, Chicago, though remote work in Illinois is an option.

Responsibilities

â–Ş Ensure that IARA has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress

â–Ş Provide leadership to develop program, membership and financial plans with the Board of Directors, and carry out policies and plans authorized by the Board

â–Ş Maintain and expand funding through fundraising events, and developing and managing relationships with donors

â–Ş Manage relationships with nearly 80 affiliated labor and community retiree organizations and recruit new affiliates

â–Ş Design and execute strategic campaigns to win federal and state legislative victories, including establishing goals, crafting tactics and identifying target legislative districts

▪ Promote active and broad participation by members, stakeholders and coalition partners in IARA’s campaigns

â–Ş Identify potential leaders within membership, and effectively work with them to develop their skills and knowledge

â–Ş Build and maintain coalitions with labor unions and advocacy organizations

â–Ş Produce persuasive and accurate educational materials and media communications

▪ Manage the operational budget and maintain the organization’s financial records, using sound financial controls

â–Ş Collaborate with the national Alliance for Retired Americans, and attend their conferences and retreats

â–Ş Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations

Qualifications

▪ Commitment to IARA’s mission and broader vision of social and economic justice

â–Ş A minimum of five years organizing experience, with two years of senior organizing experience

â–Ş Demonstrated ability to identify, develop and manage leaders and volunteers

â–Ş Strong relationship management skills, and ability to work effectively and respectfully in collaboration with diverse groups of individuals

â–Ş Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator

â–Ş Excellent planning and organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

â–Ş Self-directed, adaptable, and action-oriented

▪ Ability and willingness to travel, requiring a valid driver’s license

â–Ş Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications

â–Ş Fundraising skills

â–Ş Experience working for or in collaboration with labor unions

â–Ş Experience managing an organizer

â–Ş Financial bookkeeping and budget management skills

â–Ş Experience in electoral organizing

â–Ş Experience serving on a board of directors

â–Ş Proficient in QuickBooks, Action Network and Labor Action Network

â–Ş Experience using social media

Salary and Benefits

â—Ź Salary range $60,000 - $70,000 based on experience.
