Our work resides at the intersection of migration, climate justice, & gender, racial and cultural justice.

The Center will publicly launch in 2020 and builds on the foundation established by CultureStrike and the Citizen Engagement Lab Education Fund. The Communications team is charged with programmatic marketing, institutional marketing, multimedia content production, social media management, and developing and implementing digital strategy to create cultural change - all with an eye for impact.

Overview

The Director of Marketing & Communications will lead a talented team, leveraging social marketing and cultural strategy to position The Center for Cultural Power as a leader in narrative and cultural change. The Director of Communications will oversee in-house content production, strategy and reporting for multiple social media accounts, rapid response communications strategy, programmatic marketing, and institutional marketing with an eye for impact and creativity. The Director of Impact Communications will lead our work refining our narrative strategy as our organization grows and will supervise staff, consultants and cross functional teams to tell creative and impactful stories. Our ideal candidate is a visionary and collaborative leader who is receptive to feedback and not afraid to roll up their sleeves in order to get things done. They bring exceptional communications and digital skills, partnership development, content production, marketing and narrative strategy together with creativity, innovation, and ease. The right candidate is equally comfortable with high-level strategy and translating it into implementation, while being focused on the details of managing multiple project deadlines and deliverables. This position serves on the Executive Team.

The Work & Responsibilities

Organizational Communications

  • Build and drive the organizational voice and brand, building alignment and brand ambassadors across the staff and board.
  • Direct the organization’s aesthetic, design, and brand alignment, including subsidiary brands (CultureStrike, Climate Woke, etc). Grow brand recognition among targeted audiences.
  • Oversee and drive the website with an eye toward impact and engagement.
  • Ensure that subsidiary brands and programs are positioned for maximum impact across multiple platforms including the website and social media.
  • Direct and deliver PR Campaigns, managing relationships with PR firms
  • Oversee the creation of thought leadership pieces written by the President or other leaders in the field, ensure placement in relevant publication
  • Oversee the creation of assets to communicate organization’s scope, scale and impact including decks, digital content, and other assets.
  • Partner with development and program directors to identify and understand impact, while ensuring that communications center on organizational impact
  • Partner with development to oversee the creation of decks and messages for strategic partners and funders

Programmatic Marketing and Rapid Response

  • Direct rapid response communication strategies during major cultural moments on key issue areas, including: racial justice, gender equity, immigration & climate justice.
  • Hold weekly editorial meetings. Maintain a pulse of what is happening locally, regionally, and globally as well as new developments in the digital strategy.
  • Oversee the amplification of the President of the Center for Cultural Power’s cultural work in partnership with their social marketing team
  • Set targets for audience engagements across social platforms and oversee the testing and development of strategies to meet targets
  • Oversee editorial calendar that integrates organizational calendar, issue areas and rapid response content
  • Oversee programmatic marketing, delivering merchandise, and digital assets for all programmatic activities, including convenings, fellowships, and trainings.
  • Oversee monthly reporting on analytics, leverage data to adjust strategy and tell stories that frames impact

Content Creation and Narrative Change

  • Direct strategy and oversee development of content and digital campaign launches to increase visibility
  • Drive strategy to understand the impact of digital content and social media for our audiences (reach, engagement, and reaction data)
  • Build strategic partnerships such as Instagram, HBO, Amazon Prime, to distribute content amongst large audiences
  • Oversee content creation strategy of both in house and contracted productions
  • Partner with development and programs to frame cultural change impact strategy
  • Implement our theory of change through digital strategies that prove our impact, partner in building the infrastructure to build capacity for research & market analysts

Staff Supervision and Budgeting

  • Supervise communications team: Lead Content Producer, Manager of Institutional Marketing, and Social Marketing Manager. Lead cross functional teams that are collaborative, high performing, and inspired.
  • Oversee communications budget, tracking expenses, responding to changes and making sure spending is controlled, while meeting department benchmarks and deliverables.
  • Partner with development on narrative strategy program design building resources to enact achievable, high impact strategies.
  • Serve as a thought leader and ambassador for the organization

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are looking for candidates that are self-motivated, detail-oriented, and highly-organized. You must possess an ability to work well under pressure, as part of a team and individually. You are an excellent communicator and writer, and exercise tact and understand nuance in communications. Like others on our team, you are deeply committed to working with migrant communities, diverse populations, and to social justice.

Our ideal candidate is motivated by a fast-paced environment, is excited to design and maintain systems to keep all trains on track, and works in a relational and collaborative manner across departments and with external supporters.

Required

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following qualifications:

  • 7 + years of experience working in communications successfully managing time-sensitive, cross-functional, and increasingly complex projects, including social media campaigns, PR campaigns and digital content creation
  • 7 + years of staff management experience
  • Must be able to lead, collaborate, and work with a diverse team.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Clear visionary thinking, strong communication, and sophisticated systems and habits for self-organization
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment where flexibility and team effort are essential
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Non-remote- must be on site in Oakland office

Salary and benefits:

Salary is determined by experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits package including full medical, dental, vision (100% company paid for Employee & significant contribution towards dependent premiums), life, disability, and 401k match; vacation, sick leave, holidays).
