Staff Accountant

Position Summary: The position will be responsible to support the finance team’s accounting activities by performing transactions and routine bookkeeping accounting activities related to accounts payable, credit cards, payroll, and account receivables, under the supervision of the Controller. The Staff Accountant should have strong project management skills, be able to meet recurring deadlines, have strong attention to detail, and understanding of following internal controls. The Staff Accountant must be able to effectively communicate with clients, vendors, and peers within the department as well as across departments, and maintain a positive working relationship when addressing problems and coming up with solutions. This position reports to the Controller.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about UWD’s mission and must be committed to fighting for freedom and dignity for all communities of color.


  • 1-2 years experience with bookkeeping, AR/AP, preferably in the nonprofit sector
  • Ability to communicate effectively and adapt to fast-paced environments
  • Well-organized with a high level of attention to detail
  • Ability to think critically and make clear, reasoned judgments
  • Demonstrated patience, empathy, and a positive attitude
  • Can remain calm and composed under pressure

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites especially Excel, is required
  • Familiarity with accounting software such as Sage Intacct, Bill.com, and Expensify


  • Accounts Receivable

  • Prepares monthly/ quarterly/ annual cash receipts entries into accounting software following the organization’s G/L codes and classifications
  • Reviews and updates periodically check received log and ACH/ Wires log backup for accuracy and audit readiness.
  • Collaborate with fundraising team and other departments with submitting documentation needed to funders and donors and or invoices for reimbursement such as banking information, w-9s, verification of bank account information
  • Resolve accounts receivable issues or queries.
  • Monitors A/R aging reports periodically and alerts Controller and Senior Finance Director to ensure they are received timely
  • Runs reports of receivables and deposits to reconcile against the Fundraising Department and Digital Department as needed
  • Work with the Digital Department and Fundraising Department
    • To ensure accuracy of invoice and pledge amounts and to routinely reconcile revenue.
    • To analyze results of online donation reports including tallies of solicitation campaigns so that funds can be allocated to appropriate projects and campaigns.

  • Accounts Payable

  • Prepares semi-monthly/ monthly/ quarterly/ annual cash disbursement entries into accounting software following the organization’s G/L codes and classifications (payroll entries, accounts payables, other cash disbursements entry)
  • Manages accounts payable program for UWDN, UWDA, UWDA PAC, and fiscal sponsored organizations
  • Manages and performs periodic maintenance updates to employees and corporate card platform environment, Expensify.
  • When requested, process checks and prints out via Intacct software
  • Manages and prepares year-end activities to process and generate annual 1099s reports for all entities and fiscal sponsor organizations.

  • Credit Card Program
    • Under the supervision of the UWD Controller, serves as liaison with AMEX corporate customer service to troubleshoot any issues with credit cards, this will include but is not limited to monitoring fraudulent charges, Open/ Closing/ freezing credit cards as requested by the Senior Finance Director and making monthly payments
    • As part of the monthly/ quarterly closing procedures, the Staff Accountant will export the data from expensify and prepare data to import into Intacct by following The import UWD’s GL coding and classification

Management and Internal Control Support

  • Serve as direct support but is not limited to training fiscal sponsor organizations with UWD tools Expensify, expense policies, etc.
  • Prepare monthly billing reports and quarterly billing for fiscal sponsor organizations.
  • Assist and sustain relationships with bank representatives regarding transaction issues as well as open/ closing accounts. Requesting new and closing debit cards.
  • Assist finance team during annual audits and 990 preparation
  • Assist Controller with on-boarding and off-boarding finance orientation
  • Provide support to staff with technical issues such as Expensify and policies compliance
  • Supports the finance team in ensuring internal controls and policies in place are followed and supported by providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Support Finance in the budget process to ensure their familiarity of income, expenses related to general projects, c3, c4.
  • Other projects and tasks as needed


As UWD is a remote-first workplace, this is a full-time, remote position. We have a preference to hire in states AZ, DC, CT, CA, FL, IL, MD, MO, NJ, NM, NY, OK, SC, and TX. Once UWD determines it is safe to do so, you may be required to travel occasionally to DC or elsewhere, for internal team meetings, UWD retreats, and UWD events as required for this position.


Compensation: Commensurate with experience. United We Dream offers a competitive salary, comprehensive benefits package including paid vacation, health insurance, retirement plans and life insurance.

Base pay ranges $55,000/yr - $65,000/yr

  • Employees who have completed less than 3 years of service with United We Dream: 10 Vacation days per year
  • Employees who have completed at least 3 years of service with United We Dream: 15 Vacation days per year
  • Paid Time Off Holiday between December 24th - January 1st.
