About the Role The TPG Lead Interpreters provide direct supervision to a team of 8 to 12 Interpreters to ensure they are following protocol and meeting standards. The Lead Interpreter may need to function as an Interpreter during excessive caseloads. The Lead will be responsible for managing and reviewing Interpreter work in real-time oral translations or translations of sensitive material from Dari/Pashto into English and from English into Dari/Pashto. Respects the confidentiality in all areas and always maintains appropriate professional boundaries. Avoids advising, counseling, or interjecting personal opinions into the interpretation. Interpreters will work with the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), Office of Refugee Resettlement’s (ORR) Reunification Management Unit, and its care providers.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide oversight and execution of daily operations to ensure work is completed on schedule, within budget and to specified quality standards
  • Responsible for the day-to-day work of 8-12 Interpreters
  • Promotes Interpreter best practices and standards of practice for Interpreters
  • Conducts spot checks of Interpreters work using XXXX form to document work being performed by the Interpreter
  • Provides Interpreter immediate feedback to address or adjust service delivery
  • Review all written translation/transcriptions of interpreters before submitting to ensure they are in alignment with policy and procedures for a safe and efficient reunification
  • Regularly updates and meets with Assistant Project Manager [APM] on the project.
  • Hold daily sessions with interpreter team to check on caseload progress, discuss any policy changes from the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), and answer questions
  • Promote positive environment with an emphasis on building high morale; offer words of encouragement to assigned interpreter team and make them feel valued and appreciated; promote collaboration.
  • Ensure interpreter staff adheres to ORR policy & procedures at all times.
  • Report any issues with their assigned interpreter staff to the Senior Lead Case Manager or APM.
  • Frequently and consistently interact with each assigned interpreter staff member throughout the shift to see if they need help, have any questions, are stuck on a case, etc.
  • Responsible for relating all pertinent information between the Case Manager and Client.
  • Acts as the facilitator of communication between minors, sponsors, staff, and others as appropriate
  • Accurately interprets between staff, minors, and sponsors. Interprets the message faithfully, always conveying the content and spirit of the speaker, using the sponsor and minor’s primary language of communication in the setting
  • Strives to further professional knowledge and skills through participation in workshops, professional meetings, and interaction with professional colleagues
  • Maintain credible reports and submit in a timely manner when asked
  • Must complete ORR required trainings
  • Performs duties related to interpreting as assigned
What we’re looking for Key Skills:
  • Must have knowledge of source language colloquial terms and expressions
  • Must complete an FBI fingerprint check.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written skills in both the source and target language, including correct and accurate grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Must be able to obtain an Alta Language certificate in Dari and/or Pashto and English
  • Must possess strong computer skills in MS Office, including Microsoft Teams, Word and Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Requires strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with different departments within the company, employees and with clients.
  • Ability to take technical direction and feedback from various sources
  • Must be able to identify and escalate non-technical issues to Supervisor in a timely and effective manner
  • Follow appropriate practices and policies of the company and the client agency to protect PII.
  • Committed to providing outstanding customer service and represent TPG in a Professional manner.
  • Requires the ability to prioritize work, meet stringent deadlines, balance multiple tasks and work in a team environment.
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, to include nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Must be able to travel on duty assignments as well as work remote when needed.
Key Knowledge:
  • Minimum 2+ years professional interpretation experience required
  • Experience leading a team in a fast-paced, high-volume setting
  • High school diploma and continued education strongly preferred
  • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations strongly preferred
  • Interpretation certification preferred
  • Formal education in linguistics or related field preferred
  • Bilingual in Dari and/or Pashto and English
  • Available to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
  • Available to travel as necessary
  • Authorization to work in the United States
  • Favorable credit check
  • Clean criminal background check
  • Clean Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) or Child Protective Services (CPS) check

The Work Environment – A minimum 30-day on-site TDY, and home office work; based on project need and workload.

Work Schedule - Due to the importance of this position, employees supporting this contract can be required to work extended hours to include evening work, on-call, and weekends to support time-sensitive or real-time complex services. This position is considered ESSENTIAL. This means the Lead Interpreter will be required to work during emergency or crisis situations, including inclement weather, natural and man-made disasters, etc. Travel based on project need will be required.

Physical Demands - To perform the essential functions of the job, qualified candidates must be able to perform the following: reaching, grasping, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, mobility to walk for extended periods of time, run, carry, load and unload luggage. Position does require the ability to read written documentation from a computer screen throughout the workday, stand or walk on various surfaces for long periods of time, and drive vehicles, (alert/vigilant of surroundings) for extended periods of time.
